When it's at our house, there's time spent discussing thankfulness and I like that, especially b/c there are younguns around to teach. When it's at my aunt's, it's just a plow-through. No grace, no thankful nothing. I don't know why.
I love all the food but someone always messes up the cranberry sauce by adding some sort of orange rind or mandarin orange something and putting nuts in it.
Also there's a guest we all can't stand who's just amusing in her know-it-all-ness. She's annoying as all get out but she provides great story fodder on the way home.

My grandmother says Happy Turkey Day, and is a little... out there...
You're forced to associate with family for several hours with no break.
I have to go home. |
Mach, we from the same mold? I just stopped the WHOLE family thing. No more dealing with that crap from them.

Oh! and at my family's. Why do my wife and I prepare the plates for my kids, and my sister's kids? And clean up after them? Why the hell can't she get off her lazy ass and do it just once? Just her husband is a slug and doesn't help her...doesn't mean that I adopted her kids for the G-D day!
I like her kids...I just hate how she walks into Mom and Dad's and expects everyone to take care of her! JC, my wife's pregnant again and she is waiting on your kids...
sorry, I tapped into a little rage I didn't know I had there.

I have a relative that is just the same way. They use to walk in and check the kids at the door. We would end up watching the kids all day while their behinds got numb from sitting on them all day. Not anymore. They've been banished from our house!

Any sort of salad - bean, potato, fruit, fish, you name it.
Any dish involving onions.

We have one of those lazyass people too. We all bust ourselves to make a nice meal for family while she doesn't so much as clear a dish. And when there's an event at her house (I wish I were making this up), she serves.......
...2 hoagies. TWO FREAKIN' HOAGIES for, like, 30 people. I'm not talking gigantic ones either.

Vent away Coach! You are not alone. This so describes my BIL and SIL

I don't have children and I'm not pregnant but somehow I'm the designated childcare provider for grandkids at all family functions at our house too. Which is fine, I like the time with them and my sisters can use a break but start to feel inappropriate disciplining the children in front of my sister for something that is obviously wrong and she won't step in...

Now, now, now...don't take it that way. Maybe she admires and enjoys the way that you handle her children! Maybe it's your style, eh? Of course, maybe it's the ulterior motive - when she gets the kids home, she's the nice woman and you, well....maybe it's time that you start resembling your avatar!

I only like fresh cranberry sauce, not that icky x 100 jellied crap, which my mother loves, so this year I am making both so I can actually eat some.
Other than having to make nicey nice with my mother for a whole day, the holiday isn't that bad. There are always enough relatives there to run interference should things get ugly. And believe me, they have.

I guess this is harder than I thought it would be after seeing Thanksgiving (last month in Canada) from another point of view.
I guess my main dislike is the "over traditional" we (as Americans) view the whole thing. I guee the word I'm looking for is too commerchial
and stiff instead of laid back.
Plus...........
With the Exception of Wal-Mart
All the stores are closed.
