Yep, the one and only Frank Shorter. Looks like one of his part time jobs now is to guest star grand openings of new Running-Room stores. I happened to surf up the chance to register for a 3-miler at a northern Mpls suburb which coincided with being in town. There was a 1-mile walk and a 3-mile run. Probably 100 peeps with well over 75 of them in the 1-mi walk
So anyway, after 30-minutes of dignitaries patting themselves on the back for opening this new store.. the mayor, the park board, walking club, cross-country coach, store owner, franchiser and ultimately Frank, we finally got to start the run... well not quite, we had to walk 5 blocks to the paved path the run was on
And we're off. All the walkers really clogged it up at the start. Of course, Frank led the pack. It took me about 4-minutes before passing him. At age 58, he's got a bit of hunch and much more shuffle to his stride than the glory days. But I give him all the credit in the world for still getting out there and logging the miles.
I was hoping to keep it under 7-min pace.. got close.
7:32, 7:01, 6:31 .. 21:04 3rd place overall

Even at 58 I very much doubt that Frank was going at full tilt.
Question: Apart from starting the 1 mile walk with the 3 miler, why do so many here have a chip at walkers, surely thats the race directors fault ?
Have any of you tried walking ? Let me tell you thats it's far harder than running.

Like everybody, I walked before I ran too
and no worries Phar, I track my walking/hiking in a column of my running log too. Let's face it, there's more walkers than runners on this planet. And yeah, it does present difficulties of it's own namely the time component. The fifth mile of a five mile walk (for me at least) is creeping up and over 90-minutes on my feet, but the fifth mile of five mile run is typically done under 40-minutes. Yeah, the ole dogs ain't too happy after a long hike.
Being a running elitest is just part and parcel of my personal statement that running is teh be all and end all of the road to fitness. I just can't swallow my personal preference and say walking could possibly rank higher than the running high I've lived and breathed for 26-yrs. No offense intended to walkers at all, but I'll take my running to the exercise bank as long as my legs will let me.. not unlike Frank

Honestly jrjo, you have my permission to take me out the back and kick me fair up the date !!
I had it in mind that they were RACE WALKERS. Sorry Mate, I really must read posts more carefully. Now I understand your frustration at weaving your way through a 100 or so casual pedestrians.
Makes your third placing all the more creditable. Well done !!!
Your not going too bad for an old codger
