I clipped this out of the weekend reports and wondered what it was about. Was it a seminar on actually using swords?!? 
I've occasionally thought that fencing would probably be a good balance builder (like there's a big fencing club in Wobegon).. anyway, what's the scoop on swashbuckling?

Yes, we use real swords. They are not razor sharp; but, there no butter knife either 
The are the size of samurai swords. Like:

What looks like a skirt; but, is actually large pleated pants is called a hakama. They are usually black; but, come if a lot of colors.
We practice iaijutsu which is the art of drawing the sword and cutting in one motion. We also use bokken or wooden swords to practice with each other.
We don't fence like Erol Flynn or the 3 Muskateers.

My dad was an accomplished fencer back in his day and actually taught fencing at university in new york I believe. he's still got his old fencing irons and assorted etc.
