This race was the first tri I've ever done (not that I've done that many, yet). Today was my 5th tri overall, the 3rd so far this year. I've been pretty stressed and haven't been able to pay as much attention to my training as I would've liked for this race. My main goal was to beat my time from last year (of course).

Pre-Race
Woke up at 5 am, hit snooze. Got up at 5:15, put on my tri-shorts and a t-shirt. Grabbed a banana and some Amino Vital to sip on. Made sure I had all my stuff ready (I laid it all out last night). Loaded up my gear into the car and got to the race site at 5:50. Set up transition and went to get body-marked and pick up my chip.

After that, I took my bike out for a nice 4 mile spin and a 10 minute run. Hit the porta-potty and headed down to the water for the start. I'm in the 5th wave.

Swim - 750 meters
Last year, I basically swam maybe 1/2 of the course and managed to walk/run in the water the rest of the way. All I want to do is actually swim the course this time. Horn goes off and here we go!

Went out a little slow and really tried to not get out of breath. I succeeded, but I could tell I was going to be in the back half of the pack. The swim was uneventful, which is a very good thing. My goggles weren't really fogging up and I was sighting very well. Hit the turnaround buoy at the same time as a friend who was doing this race as his first. He looked a little out of breath, so I told him he's halfway home. About halfway back in, my goggles got really foggy, so I had to stop and get a good read on which way I should be heading. Found my markers and took off again. I knew my swim was a little slow, but I felt like I didn't work too hard and I was really comfortable in the water. Swim time: 16:something.

T1
I walked a lot of T1, my legs were feeling a little sluggish and frankly, I wanted to puke.

Bike - 13 miles
Hit the bike and spun at a higher cadence for about half a mile or so, then I switched gears and got down to business. My rear derailluer felt like acting up and kept jumping between cogs when I was in my middle gears. So either I get to spin in a higher gear than I want, or in a lower gear and burn my legs. I opted for both. On the few flats, I was able to do okay, but having to settle for a higher gear on the uphills slowed me down a little. But it did serve to keep my legs from getting fried. This course was fairly hilly. None of them are really huge, but there's a lot of them. Managed to average about 18.5 mph.

T2
Uneventful. Put on my running shoes and glasses and took off.

Run - 5 kilometers
Had the usual 'dead legs' feeling. They should livened up a bit after half a mile or so, but they didn't. I'm sure they would've turned over quicker, but for some reason, I couldn't make them do it. The first mile sucked. The second mile hurt. I don't remember much about the third, I really just wanted to have a damn beer. I realized that this run might be about as fast as last year's. I should've been able to run it about 2-3 minutes quicker. Some days you got it, some days you don't.

I did managed to stop my watch this time when I hit the finish line. 1:27:21 (Last year was 1:31:30)

Overall, it was not bad. I'm happy with the swim. The bike went well, especially since I couldn't ride the gear I wanted most of the time. I feel the run just sucked. I'm not really sure I pushed as hard as I could. Anyways, 28 out of 42 in the age group. The field was fast this year. We are blessed with a ton of really quick age groupers in this area, so finishing in the middle ain't too bad.

Post race food was the awesome red beans & rice (with sausage this time!) that have become a regular feature of the NCTS races. I hung out and chatted a little with some peeps. Saw my spin instructor and cheered in the last athletes. This race had 1,000 competitors, one of the largest in the area. Angie and a coworker were in attendance and got some pictures, which will be posted later.

I'm gonna go have my damn beer. cheers

heeeeeaaay! Faster than last year. Nice job. While as a runner I officially must hate all triathletes ( Wink ), I'm very impressed with anyone who can do one. Way to work it.

Bikes should never let you down on race day. I think this is a perfect excuse to rush to your nearest bike shop and buy a really cool bike. Razz
Great race, and race report!

Excellent job out there. LMAO about all you wanting was a beer while on the run. Funny! Was it a hot day? Could have been a reason your legs didn't respond as you thought they should have.

It ended up being hotter than I was used to running in. Most of my runs are in the morning before work and my ride are after work in the heat. So yeah, that would make sense.
