Posted: 07/12/04 - 22:50 Post subject: Triangle Triathlon Race Report (w/ Pictures!) (LONG!!)
This was my first triathlon and I really wanted to just be able to finish it (but I really wanted to finish it in under 1:45).
I did this race with my sister and she met me at my place and we went to the race together. Set up in the transition area went okay, I made some mental notes of where my stuff was and made sure I knew where I would be entering and exiting.
Big props to Inside Out Sports, who had techies there with a tire pump to top off my tires before the race. We found out that due to construction, the bike course was shortened 2 miles to 13 miles.
7:34 am - Race Start. I'm racing in the Novice Mens division, which is the next to last wave. I watch the elites start, then head to the bathroom one last time.
8:10 am - The wave before mine starts, and then we get into the water and get ready. My stomach is doing backflips right about now.I've done open water swim only once, it was this exact course, but with far fewer people. I end up in the center of the group, the worst place to be.
8:14 am - My Wave Starts. I go kinda slow to let everyone get separated out a bit, then I did a usual slow freestyle stroke. The first half of the swim was bad, IMHO. I swallowed a bit of lake water that threw my breathing out of rhythym and nearly got kicked in the face. In order to keep my HR from skyrocketing, I flipped over on my back and did a few backstrokes until I caught my breath. I had to switch between freestyle and backstroke often, I was too nervous about my lack of open water experience.
After I reached the turnaround buoy, my breathing was under control and I started catching and passing others in my wave. My breathing felt good and I was able to sight the swim finish.
T1: Found my spot okay and made a decent transition, except I forgot to put on my cycling gloves, so I carried them onto the course in my hands.
Bike: I got my gloves on during the first mile on the bike. I live about 5 minutes from the race site, so I trained on the bike course 2x a week for 2 months. I studied it and knew every inch. Once on the bike, I was grinning like crazy: This was MY HOUSE. I knew I should rest my legs on the downhills and then use a fast cadence on low gear on the uphills. I passed people like crazy by doing that and my legs never got tired.
T2: Doubt I could get it to go better. Just changed shoes and took of my helmet and gloves. Speed laces rock.
Run: The first mile was a bit hard on the legs. After that, though, I felt like I was going a blistering pace. The run course consisted of two loops. When I was on my second loop, I saw my sister who was on her first run loop about 15 feet ahead of me. I sped up and we ran the rest of the loop together talking and joking with each other and cheering each other on. She turns for her second loop and I made out like a bandit for the finish.
In all, I can't remeber being so nervous, tired, or proud in my short life. I think this was one of the most challenging, rewarding and FUN things I've done. Triathletes are probably the coolest, most supportive people I've seen and I feel honored that I've been welcomed into that group.
Time:
750 meter swim: 17:41
T1: 2:21
13 mile bike: 45:06
T2: 1:23
5k run: 25:01 (I PR'd my 5k distance in a f'ing triathlon?!?)
Overall Time: 1:31:30
Rank: 37th of 80 men in the Novice Division.
Lessons and Thoughts:
I think I'll skip the cycling gloves and socks next time.
I'll definitely try to get more open water practice.
I'll see if I can get a transition bag, just to make carrying stuff a little easier.
I want aero bars!
Hopefully my big yellow Casio G-Shock that's 15 years old (see pics below) will be replaced soon with a Timex.
I'm definitely doing another tri this year.
