Posted: 07/07/04 - 21:06 Post subject: Training for the half:
I am getting back into running and I miss doing races. I've done a bunch of 5ks and 10ks and I really liked the 10k but I want to aim higher (SO not ready for a full). There is a great half marathon in Coronado, San Diego, very flat and runs along the ocean, and I would like it to be my "coming out" race for the half. Thing is, it is in November. Am I nuts to think I could be prepared in time, even if I stay in good health and manage to avoid any injuries. I'd like to register for the added motivation, but don't want to lose the $30 registration fee, so if worse comes to worse I could settle for the 5k. But I'd rather not do this...I'd really rather do the half.
Anyway, is a November half doable or should I look for one in March 2005?

You could do a Hal Higdon program. Try it, and see what happens. If nothing else, you'll get your base up.

You can do it.
You've got plenty of time to build up the mileage for a half.
Do a four day a week program. Long runs on Sunday.
Work your long runs up...It'll be great.
1/2 marathon is my favorite distance.

everyone tends to think it's do-able, if done smartly.

That would be great! I have a training schedule mapped out until the end of August. I'll really work on building mileage thereafter. I am looking to finish the half in about 2 hours so I am not going to get hung up on speed...at least not for a while. Do you have a race in mind? This is the one I am running: SIlver Strand Half Marathon If you noticed, there is a half skate.

I really think I will like the half. I cannot find my running log anywhere...it's in a box somewhere in this house. I cannot remember when to add mileage to long runs. I think I used to do .5 miles every other week. Is this about right?
One thing about training that I loved is the planning. I am a list-maker. I'm so excited!!!

Atlanta Marathon/Half Marathon oooh a skate sounds tempting but not in the budget.
i have a schedule made to Labor day for a skate 10k but already started too add more running in it anyway. looking at your .5 mile addition hough i might have to review it. is the increment of only .5 due for aerobic capacity or for muscle training? i was thinking more like a full mile but not every week to extend.

Just a suggestion off the top of my head reguarding long runs.
Start with a long run of 6 miles. Then add a mile the next week, and the week following. That's 8 miles
Then, drop back to 6.
Then, up to 10.
next, up to 11.
Then, drop back to 8.
Then run a 12
then a 13.
Then drop back to 10
Then run a 14.
then a 15.
Drop back to ten.
That's 13 weeks. You can vary it depending on how many weeks you have. But...don't run any farther than 8-10 miles the week before the race.
I ran my best half...after maxing at 16 miles.
You need to run past 13 miles in training, if you want to do well. If you just want to finish...running a 12 or 13 miler as your top run would be OK.
