 Posted: 10/17/04 - 18:52 Post subject: Trails and Rivers Half Marathon- huge PR and AG award!
It turned out that this race was somewhat harder than I expected although it was termed "flat and fast" and I have ran the route many times on my long runs. The weather conditions were less than ideal-cold, rainy and windy. The out and back course was technically "cross country" considering that it was mostly ran on soft surfaces and gravel trails with a few short sections of road. The headwinds were most prevalent on the way back, which did wreck havoc on my pacing. The scenery was great though-good views of the mountains and the river despite the clouds.
I started out at a pretty conservative pace (4:31 for the 1st km) and progressively and gradually built up the speed for the next 8-10k or so. Hit the 10km marker in 42:36, still feeling decent. The first major problem came after the 11km mark when my left quad started to stiffen up abit...my pace slowed down a bit. It went on for the 2-3 km before it subsided. By this time I was in 5th place overall with the 4th and 3rd guys just 10-20 seconds ahead of me.
I passed the 4th guy at around the 14-15 km mark and tackled the 3rd for a bit. I managed to pass him and and hung on in front of him for quite some time, which was to my demise when the headwinds came. The winds came on pretty strong and my pace started to slow significantly-for one km split I was 30-35 seconds slower than my previous split. The 3rd guy however was happily drafting off me during this time and passed me again after the 17 km marker. I managed to hang on (though my legs were starting to hurt) and finish just 14 seconds behind him in 1:28:24. A huge pr of 9 mins from my 1st half back in February (1:37). Came in 4th overall and 3rd in the open men's division. Got my 2nd medal!! 1st 2 guys finished in 1:21 and 1:22 respectively. The 3rd guy was the 1st in the masters men's division. Not sure how many people ran it...probably over a 100. Results will be posted in a couple of days.
Overall I felt I did well considering the conditions were less than ideal and the fact that it was mostly offroad although I still could have done better. I think I picked up the pace a bit too early in the race and partly as a result my actual splits were way off my projected splits especially in the 2nd half of the race.... I have a second shot at the distance (on road) coming up in mid November so this one is a "learning race"...there's still a chance to shoot for 1:25....Now I gotta recover quickly for I have a 10k in 2 weeks...
