Posted: 02/29/04 - 11:32 Post subject: Top of Foot Pain
My foot was hurting just a little bit and didn't think anything of it. Fast forward until last Sunday, I did a 5K training walk (everytime I ran the pain was sharp) and my foot was hurting pretty bad by the time I went to bed that evening.
Fast forward to Wednesday night, the 27th. I fall in the parking lot of the gym and get scraped up pretty bad (I'm a complete and total KLUTZ).
It hurt Thursday. It ached on Friday, but I did my grocery shopping on Friday night and by the time I got home it was on fire (figuratively).
Yesterday morning, I got up and as soon as my foot hit the floor it hurt. I took a shower and took my girl to dance. My foot was so swollen I had a hard time putting a shoe on and it hurt a lot (about a 6 on a 1-10 scale). I came straight home after dance and spent most of the day on my back with my foot up and iced and it felt ok.
As soon as I changed the elevation and put pressure on it, it throbbed and swelled more. Today..the pain has gone up to an 8. It's still swollen. I fear stress fracture.
Here are a couple questions:
I should go to an orthopedist, right? Should I go to one specializing in sports medicine rather than a podiatrist or my family physician? Should I ask for an MRI or just a normal x-ray (I know stress fractures are hard to see on a normal x-ray).
Are there anti-inflammatory pain killers that are not ibuprofen? (I'm allergic to aspirin and ibuprofen gives me the same reaction)
Should I continue to ice or should I change to heat?

Sorry to hear about your foot. I would suggest you see an orthopod, preferably a sports medicine orthopedist. He/She can tell you if you need the MRI vs. the x-ray.
I have used Naproxen as an anti-inflammatory. I don't think it is from the same drug family as Ibuprofen, so the Naproxen may not have the same effect on you.
I would suggest that you keep icing. I don't see how that can hurt.
Good luck.

Sounds terribly painful. I'd see an ortho, one that specializes in sports medicine. I hope you find an answer soon.
I'm a total klutz too. Carpet trips me, door frames move in my path...

Tripped on any sidewalk cracks? I have, several times.
