PostPosted: 08/05/03 - 22:57    Post subject: Toe
A week ago Monday I dropped a rather heavy piece of furniture on my bare toe. (The big one) The nail didn't turn black, but the toe did--also a line of purple from the toe extending about an inch up the top of my foot. It was very swollen. From what I read, a doc couldn't/wouldn't do much unless there was joint damage. I have been walking on it and keeping the toes buddy wrapped--as the Merck Manual suggested.

The swelling has gone down--although my running shoes are still tight (and they had a generous toe box before) and I can't wear sandals because of the swelling. I can walk on it just fine.

Question (finally!) At what point do you think I could run again? Is this one of those situations that "when it feels good" I can? Or is this one of those that I should have looked at by a doc just for the running advice? Running is very important to me and I don't want to do something stupid and falsely heroic.

Are you taking any anti-inflammatory meds?

I'd say that if you feel like you can run on it, you probably can. My guess is that inflammation is causing most of the pain.

When I was 9 my Mom dropped a piece of furniture on her big toe. Lo and behold, she broke it! Lots of funny stories about that situation.

Anyway, maybe a trip to the doctor is needed. Because if it is broken, you sure don't want to run on it.

Toes are wierd, in that a broken toe can hurt more than a broken arm. Also, they can't really do much for them unless it's the big toe in terms of setting them. I'd get it checked before running on it to make sure it's not broken, since you could wind up with a worse fracture.

I broke three toes (two on right foot, one on left foot) by dropping a sheet of 3/4" plywood across them. I missed a little less than a week of running and bought a pair of shoes a half size bigger because they were still pretty swollen. The next step was to become a heel striker instead of mid-foot striker to lessen the impact on the toes. I was able to continue my half marathon training that way and they healed relatively quickly. I was back to mid-foot strike probably 3-4 weeks later.

OMG! You just made me reflexively cringe!

I must say, though, I am VERY impressed! Wow! Three toes and you continued marathon training. Wow!

Update:

Made the appointment, went today. Doc felt that if it was still looking and feeling the way it did, that it was likely broken. (I went mainly for running advice were the foot to be broken) So, she had it xrayed and told me to keep it taped and iced just like I had been doing. She'll call me with the results later today.

Thanks for your advice, guys. I like having a resource with knowledgeable and experienced runners. You guys are the greatest.
