was great. I didn't get arrested, my homemade tshirt ("otra gringa para justicia") was very well-received, there were lots and lots of people there (lots of nonHispanics, too), and I didn't see any evidence of violence from the demonstrators or the police.
The organizers did a good job of ensuring that protesters knew their rights, so wouldn't be too scared to come out. All in all, a fine exercise of 1st Am rights, on a beautiful day to boot.

I have a lot of respect for that, Go. A lot.

For crowds as large as these, whoever is doing the organizing and co-ordinating is/are to be commended. They are well-behaved, and peaceful. A month or so ago when they had a demonstration in downtown Chicago, which I got caught in as I was going to take the train home, I experienced the march up close and personal. It was damn near a celebratory mood. And lest anyone forget, the marchers were not just from south of the border - Many countries in South America, Ireland, Eastern Europe.
If they could only have not screwed up everyone's rush hour drive home.

I wonder how many illegals were there that should have been arrested.
Funny how they can protest under our hard won freedoms, but do not go through the legal process of immigration like many of our forefathers did.
I am sure I would not be offered the same freedoms in other countries.
It is also sad the Feds fail to act in enforcing this problem.

Precisely the mentality that keeps people, no matter their status, from exercising their 1st Amendment rights. Even undocumented aliens have that right, Joe.
I agree that the Feds don't enforce this correctly, but that's in large part due to the fact that immigration policy as a whole sucks. Even as a matter of efficiency, what would you have done? Put thousands of people in jail? Where? What would the processing for that have looked like? Should we do that for all 11MM illegals? And BTW that number has been plucked from the air--lots of people who think about immigration it for a living believe it's more like 18-25MM people.
If we couldn't take care of the people of New Orleans, what makes you think we could process much huger numbers of people?

I agree it is a huge problem. The right people are staying in, the wrong people getting exported in some cases - I know after 9/11 a lot of legals had problems applying for visas, and some (a Bermudian drug counselor in Detroit I know) got exported, while illegals were still able to apply for assylum. The whole thing is fcucked and needs some major work. I support the protest the other day and I hope we can figure out a way to make this whole thing come together.
