and here I sit Sad

My mom, one of the pastors from her church, my roommate, and 3 other friends are riding. I'm so sad. But I haven't had time to maintain proper hygiene in the last few months much less ride long distances each weekend, so its for the best. But sad.

So I was enjoying that I didn't have to wake up at 4 this morning for the first time in 5 years and sleeping in when my phone rings, its one of my "3 other friends", she and her husband call to tell me my roommate has packed her cycling shoes into her overnight bag on the long gone baggage truck, do I have any shoes that fit her pedals? teehee I'm finding this situation hilarious. And I do in fact have some shoes that will work. Saint of a husband of my friend is on his way over here, and will meet the girls at the lunch stop while my roommate pedals in freshly purchased wal-mart canvas shoes for 35 miles. teehee

Mama Pfff just checked in while refuelling briefly at ~40 miles in and she's averaging 15.5 mph, which, for my mom and for the flat and crowded sections she's been in so far is FLYING She's so pumped, she's never been so fast! Dancing Banana She's in awesome shape this year, I'm so glad its paying off.

Meanwhile, my roommate and the married couple, husband picked up my shoes and was off to try to find them (he's a nicer guy than I'd be, I wouldn't do all that!). The way my roommate got the idea is, the friend who called me had to bail due to bad sickness mid-ride one year and her parents picked her up. Mom drove her and dad got a wild hair, borrowed her helmet and rode 50 hilly hot sunny miles in jeans and normal shoes on her clipless pedals Shocked teehee so, we've seen it done. and yes I think it takes a slice of crazy. I can't belive she forgot her shoes. I'm just glad she had the sense to get walmart shoes and not do it in her flip flops.

PS Miss Jenn, all riders are outfitted with Flux Capacitors. Hope that helps clear things up. (1.2 jiggawatts??1.2 jiggawatts??) teehee

I rode home from work in my running shoes one day. It's hard to keep a size 13 on top of a SPD pedal.

For those who want to follow along, here is the map mom is carrying in miniature in her back pocket

also new this year (and FASCINATING to me having ridden all these hills) is a topographical map. There are two routes on the ride day one and day 2. Both days the routes merge by or at lunch. But day 2 is the tough but fun day. Particularly if you do the parks/hillier route. (Now all you people who live in hilly places can officially mock my inability to do hills as we have proof of how hard/not hard they are).

As the spouse of someone who was persuaded by someone Wink into doing one of these I'm sorry you aren't able to do the 150 this go-round. But you're keeping your fingers in the pie.

GO MOM PFFFF ! ! ! !

Houston Chronicle Article

Still waiting to hear from my mom today. She called yesterday to say "I'm finished!! and I'm finished--its 100 degrees out here! I didn't sign up for hte Hotter n hell Hundred!!!" but she promised to give today a try.

My roommate got my shoes yesterday but her feet are enough bigger than mine that they were causing cramps and so she went back to the walmart shoes and clipless pedals toward the end of the day. She was reunited with her own shoes last night. My friends are on their way back to Houston right now.

Mom called! She's on the "bus. The air conditioned bus. The cushioned seat bus. Its lovely." (apparently its been a hot day) She says this might be her last year, it really wore her out. She did run into nearly all my friends along the way! She also rode for a while with the man who raised the most money of all the riders this year raising $175,000. Thats one hundred seventy five THOUSAND dollars. Shocked He and my mom talked for a while, his wife has MS and he said "I'm partial, but she's pretty special and I'd do anything to find a way to beat this disease" cry

So, anyway, another successful year. And mom's napping now.
