I was still at home when it happened. My DH called and told me to turn on the TV. I was shocked! Then, about 1/2 hour later he called and told me to pack his duffle bag just in case he had to be recalled (he had only been out of the USAF for 10 months or so at that point). I freaked out. I had no friends who were military wives except my SIL who I had never met and who, at the time, lived in Japan. I called her because I knew she was used to living not knowing where her husband was from day to day due to his "top secret" military job. She and my BIL comforted me as much as they could. Thankfully, my DH didn't get recalled.
Blue - I wasn't comparing apples for apples with the Katrina situation...only that time DOES begin to heal things. Will it ever be the same? No. Neither will things at Ground Zero. But will life begin to have a bit of normalcy after a while? Yes.

I was a sleep deprived SAHM with a 5, 2 and 7 month old and living in South Carolina when it happened. I had just sent my oldest off to Kindergarten and was quietly laying down until my younger two children awakened for the day. Had the radio on...listened to the announcers (Bob & Sherry) get all upset...scream something about the World Trade Center...and was startled awake.
I immediately turned on the TV to witness the most horrific scenes and watch the most terrible story on US history (to me) unfold.
I remember watching my 5 year old skip down the street as she got off the bus...happily...skipping merrily...smiling...and I was thinking how her little world would one day not be so beautiful. I cried seeing her do that.
I'll never skip again the same...neither will our world.

I knew they weren't graphic pictures (like some I've seen) but for some people the memory is too much to handle still.

I worked in Arlington Va. just 5 miles from the Pentagon i actually used to do my speed drills in thier parking lot back then.
I had just gotten into work when the first attack happened, Like Ranger i thought it was a horrific accident but nothing maliscious. when the second one hit i knew somnething was up too. My cow-oinker du jopur was telling me that the landing computer was messed up, he's got tons of hours flying, a jumbo jet? no just private jets.
I tried feverishly to get a hold of my GF who worked just 1 mile from the Pentagon on the other side of the river, she was able o see it out her office window but overlooking the other side of the impact. I could not get thru at first but eventually i did. at this point there were rumors about EVERY PLANE IN THE AIR. Reports of planes landing on The Mall grounds. I watched CNN until the hospital went into DISASTER mode. My hospital was the closest to the Pentagon. it's justification for being built was because there was no hospital within the "critical hour" when it was built in the 50's
being former Military i was placed into a Gaurd status by what was now the hospital's command center. reporting suspiscious packages and directing pedestrian traffic away the scene/command center. i got home much later than normal. well actually my GF place we stayed glued to the TV, like much of the nation, trying to make sense of what had just happenned and how would this affect our normallcy of life in the DC area.
My GF was from Long Island and had friends and relatives that worked in Manhattan all i could do was hold her and try to comfort her as she was unable to get thru to any of her family until 1 am on a cell phone. we found out then her immediate family was ok. we still had no idea about several others though from this very nuclear italian family that was in contact with each other on a regular basis. sleep was not easy. Fighrter jet sorties in the air. the smoke from the Pentagon was heavy in the air as we were in it's blow pattern.
yes the world had changed and the "barbarians" were knocking at our ramparts now.

I was in Italy, at a wine tasting when it happened. We were trying to split a case of wine to get shipped back to the US and they kept telling us "No shipping today". We were buzzed from the free wine and were kidding them about it and then they said we should all go listen to the news.
That was the most sobering newscast ever. One of my friend's boyfriend was in DC on an audit so she was petrified, until she finally got hold of him and found out he was safe.
One of my former co-workers and friends (Genie, you remember Al from the wedding) was to have flown in to a meeting at the Towers with Morgan Stanley. His flight was cancelled unexpectedly that morning.
I remember it took forever to get through on all of the phone lines. I also remember and still appreciate the kindness of the Italian people. As soon as someone found out we were American they expresseed their sympathy. Several of our hotels had signs up in English doing the same, and one had a display of little American flags in the tiny lobby.
We had a moment of silence on the boat yesterday.
