We have a dear family friend who has been told by her doctor she is dying. Her heart is so destroyed it's just a matter of time--and there is nothing they can do but make her comfortable.
Let me describe her to you, I'm sure many of you have had someone just like her in your lives: (I saw my grandparents only twice, so I never had that joy growing up) She is that tiny older lady who is by no means frail. She has a strength of spirit that puts us youngsters to shame. She is quick to laugh, quick to hug. Never saw her in a bad temper. She is quick to share hot chocolate with you. She has that sparkle in her eyes that tells you she's smart and feisty.
I have never dealt with this situation. She apologized to ME on the phone profusely--that she had failed me. I tried to convince her that she had been nothing but a blessing to my life and that she is a fantastic human being who I loved dearly.
Those of you who have dealt with this, what do you say? What can you say? I hope to call her again soon--she sounded so frail on the phone.

I agree. Just call, make her laugh, listen if she wants to vent, just being there will mean more to her than you can know. It's hard watching someone you love die but they take comfort in knowing you still care about them, they really do.
