Let me paint the scene... 12F degrees, western winds bringing the windchill to an even zero. Very sunny though, so that's a nice touch. This is a local run, totally advertised by word of mouth and posters at the fitness center. Turnout hovers around 100 brave souls each December 31st. This was my fourth year. I had placed 4th, 3rd, and 1st each of the last years, so my "title" was on the line.

The first mile is always an honor for the race organizer, who leads us through the first block. He had a double-bypass earlier this year, so it was a big grinner for him. Needless to say, with the icy road shoulders, and a slow start, my first mile split was 6:59. A couple guys took off pretty quick, so I was sitting in third here. My second mile I picked it up some and reeled in the second place guy, 6:25. Coming up on a half mile to go, I'm pouring on steam trying to gain some ground on the leader who was about 10 seconds out, but he must have been taking it home too (dang them college kids home on holiday break). I finished about the same margin behind him as I was at the 2 mile mark ...last 1.1 was 6:38, ending time of 20:02. Actually, my best time for this run yet, so I'm pretty happy. If this race was a Yahtzee roll, I'd have a small straight I guess..4th, 3rd, 1st, & 2nd. Mr. Green

Good job! You'd never catch me out there when the temps were an even 0°F. Don't they have treadmill races in MN?

What a way to bring in the New Year! Looks like a great year of racing is in your future, based on that race. And brrr, John, that's crazy cold racing weather.

Wow!!! You are Boston bound for sure, my friend! Excellent job! Mr. Green

Sounds like a great day for running to me! Bring on the cold, we'll be dreaming of it in August when we're melting into the asphalt....
