Posted: 03/24/05 - 17:00 Post subject: Tire Purchase
I need to buy new tires for the truck and I found this site: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=HAS. The problem is I have no idea which tire to get that is worth the money. I found out that the same tires I currently have had for 80K are only 90 bucks each. Here I was expecting to pay 150 - 200 per tire so now I am totally confused.
It really stinks trying to sort this out.

Does the price you're getting off that site include balance, mounting, new stems, tax, used tire disposal fee, etc etc ?
You would probably do just as well by calling around town. Just say you are looking for 4 tires, the size and what the "drive away" cost is. Its your call as to specific brands and all that. You would be amazed on the variance you will find. Many places also offer free rotation and balance check for as long as you own the tires.

Go read reviews of the tires that interest you. They have them online, merely a search away.
Do you do a lot of driving in the rain? Then get a tire for that.
Do you do a lot of hot/dry pavement driving? Then go for that.
Tires are way fun to shop for--lots of different choices.
I always wanted a set of the Goodyear aquatreads. Still haven't bought them yet.

I've heard many good things about the Michelin Cross-Terrains
I've got another Michelin model (can't remember which) on my Land Rover. They seem to be really good.
I had Goodyear Wrangler RT/S on my last SUV. I even thought they were pretty good.

Hey! That's what I just bought for my Trooper. Sam's put them on and even gave me free labor because it took them 31 minutes instead of 30. (I didn't even ask--even though their sign promised it--excellent customer service)
I like my GY Wranglers, just wish they were bigger--but at some point it's the law of diminishing returns.

Andy,
I think I am going to have to make some calls tomorrow to see what kind of prices I can get (including all the other stuff) and see what I come up with. I set aside a budget of my tax refund but now I am thinking I over estimated.
I guess it is time to make some calls.

I've got Michelins on my Land Rover as well - I like them. They're expensive, though. I believe that tirerack has a pretty good "suggestion" feature - you can enter in your vehicle and it gives you the most popular tires to put on them. If you're only paying $80 per tire and you like them, I'd just stick with it.

when i got new tires last, i spent just as much ordering them online then taking them to the local tire place to be put on as i did going to costco and not having my car for a whole day.
i think it was around 250 either way, but i got nicer tires for less money this way getting them online.

I need two new tires. I've been putting it off for a while because really, who wants to spend $300 on tires?

We've had a SUV for 10 years (either a Tahoe or a Suburban) and these are the best tires, by far, we've ever had on them. Great traction, wet or dry, and very, very quiet on the highway.

I had to get a new tire last week and it was $300 for ONE tire!
We got a flat, but couldn't tell. Delta was driving and he said the car wasn't driving differently and the noise we heard sounded like we had acquired a plastic bag on the front or something. But when we slowed down, it got even noisier and that's when we discovered the tire was flat. Because we drove on it a bit, it got too hot and the edge rippled. So no $20 repair, but a frikkin-frakkin $300 new tire that had to be ordered. Oy.

Monster truck tires can be very expensive.

I talked to the guy at one tire place and he is claiming that by putting a slightly bigger tire on my truck it would get better gas mileage and the engine would run a little better. When I asked at a second place the other guy said you won't necessarily get better mileage.
This is the kind of crap I hate when going to auto places to get things fixed.
