The same reason you should tip your server at a restaraunt or the person that cuts your hair.
They are either underpaid by their business because tips are to be expected or because a big portion of the cost you pay for the massage goes directly to the business and not to the therapist.
Some massage folks also have to pay to rent for space in the business AFTER the salon or whatever has taken out their portion from the fee.
I have had good luck with someone that does massage therapy out of her home. Her prices are far lower because she doesn't have to include all of the overhead costs in her fees. Therefore, I can give a larger than normal tip but still have saved lots of money.
She still works for a fancy shmancy hoity toity salon. For the exact same 1 hour massage, you can pay $40 from her home or $95 at the salon.
All joking aside, a good massage once or twice a year by someone that knows what they are doing is a great idea for runners putting in high mileage or rapidly increasing their speed. After 1 hour, I feel like I have taken off 2 weeks of training. Great for fixing and/or preventing overuse injuries.

Good points X but now a days it seems like everyone has a hand out or at least a tip jar.
What's next tipping the doctor for doing surgery.
Save for servers at places to eat, I don't think people should be tipped for doing their job's

Aren't servers doing their jobs? Somebody's got to bring the food out to you, right?
Doctors are performing a service that's necessary. What masseuses and the like do are services that are not necessary or are a convenience replacing a necessity. That's why you tip a bellboy (unnecessary) but not the guy who wheels you out of a hospital (necessary), why you tip a cabby (convenience) and not a bus driver (necessity).

I do tip my barber yes, but only if its not the owner who cuts my or Mike's hair.
My save for servers point was that I do believe they should be tipped, save=except.
Tipping is getting out of hand these days, its now expected to tip someone when it used to be you tipped because you got good service.

Yes, I know what that word means. My point was, why do you feel that only wait staff should get tipped, and nobody else? I mean, they're doing their jobs, too, by waiting on you.

I over paid you for the RR shirts, that was a tip not an oversight
I leave a tip on the table when I leave an establishment. Its up to the person who picks it up to divie (sp) it up.
