Should also keep the tires inflated, clean air filters, good spark plugs, etc., wouldn't hurt to drive like a grandma either.......
Best thing to do is to become independant from motor-transportation. (live real close to work, telecommute, etc.)

You're going to save approximately $10 a tank. Unless you do a tremendous amount of driving and you didn't owe anything on your sable, it is normally more expensive to change cars.
I did the math of changing cars when I was driving 250 miles a day back and forth to school in my Jeep that gets 17 mpg on a good day. It was cheaper (in the long term) to stay in the Jeep than to change cars.

I did the math too and realized it was cheaper to pay for a monthly pass on public transport than to drive back and forth to school plus go into Center City once a week.
Now I have time to do all the puzzles in the paper and read for class besides.

When we factor in the car payments and gas savings, we'll be saving minimum of $25/month. True, we'll have a car payment a bit longer, but when it's paid off we'll have a more reliable car with fewer miles; the perfect car for our daughter who will then be at driving age. Plus, I feel better that we're doing at least our small part at trying to conserve fuel. It's not just about what's best for ourselves.

How about not giving your teen a car to drive? That should save a lot of dough.
What do they need to have their own car anyway? I didn't get a free car from anyone when I was a teen.

Neither did I. But then I didn't live 30 minutes from school, I could walk or take the city bus from my home, and my both my parents worked out of the home, so having a car available when we needed one wasn't an issue.
But this isn't really on topic, is it?

Saving gas and money by not giving your child a car is on topic. I think school buses are a handy thing. I take your school district do not provide this type of service?
I used to drive our kids to their school back and forth because they went to a catholic school. Now we save tons of gas money because they both take the bus to school (high school). We are not giving my 16 yr old an old car to drive for school just because he now has a driver's lic.

Of course we have school buses, and I imagine the kids will take the bus the majority of the time. But of course the school bus only works when they are coming home straight after school. I know when I was in school, and involved in a lot of activities, that was maybe 50% of the time.
I don’t intend to give each of my kids a car just because they have a license either. If we can get by without a 3rd car when they are teenagers, we will. But it doesn’t hurt to plan ahead as where we live is going to make transporting the kids to school and all their activities a lot harder than if we lived in town.

I'm all for planning ahead myself. But I think it's more cost-effective not to bankroll our kids gasoline and car payments. A thirty minute drive to pick them up from their after school (school sponsored) activities isn't much trouble to me, in my opinion.
Don't school buses take them to games and such? Carpooling is a good gas saving idea, too.

I guess different things work best for different families.
