Reading Diva's thread on RRHO made me think. If it takes $100 to fill up your car a week, or some other number that you're just not mentally prepared to spend, what are some of the things you'll have to stop doing?

Probably won't take many, if any, planned weekend road trips this Fall. I would limit trips as much as possible (to/from work, to/from stores) and consolidate trips.

The first thing to go would be internet access at home.

I heard that driving with the windows down is actually less efficient than running the a/c as it creates more drag on the car.

That is correct.

Hmm, hadn't thought of that. Sadly, my average mph on my commute is around 15 mph, so I wonder if the drag coeficent comes into play at that speed?

When the price of gas is high enough, someone in America will be motivated by entrepreneurship (and profit, natch) to market personal transportation more cheaply and efficiently. I put my complete faith and trust in the free market in this situation to work, just like it always has, to deliver a new innovation when another is no longer feasible or cost-effective.
But don't wait until it gets too high, whoever you are.

maybe true, but i swear that i get better gas mileage out of my car when i dont use the a/c. like 25-30 miles difference.

Can I live with you before that stops?
First to go will be driving. I wouldn't mind getting rid of the internet. Perhaps the phone would go next. High-cost food products. Liquor.

We down-sized from comfortable Sable to a base model Corolla that gets much better gas mileage. We're going to be making a real efort to take the car intead of the van whenever possible, even though riding around with the 3 kids crammed in the small back is not fun for anyone.

Good thought, CB. We're heading out of town in a week, and I think we'll take the neon rather than the mpv...
