Mastr,
Sorry to hear about your friend.

This is what really motivated me as of late. I mean, I'm a pretty big guy, but not what I would consider obese. 6'1" and 230 at the moment (yea, I have put on a few in my absence) But according to my BMI I am considered OBESE. I read that and thought...holy sh!t..I'm OBESE?!?! How in the hell did that happen.

I thought about my daughter and the great feeling of being athletic in high school and college....that was my turning point.

Unfortunate and sad.

In her 50's, sedentary, and obese - how is this shocking? Unexpected, maybe, but not shocking.

M-brew, you were getting ready to do what you could to help but, sadly, too little, too late...and it wasn't your fault. I imagine that we all have friends and family who might fit into the obese and sedentary category. We don't want to lose them. We can only do so much to convince them that a change would do them a world of good but how many of us are comfortable with bringing this to their attention? Family and friends - shouldn't be a problem. Co-workers? A little bit trickier. Who wants to come off as being pushy or someone who gets told to mind their own business?

Has anyone ever advised an obese person about the benefits of regular exercise and a sensible diet, only to be told about "that skinny guy who ran all the time but keeled over after running a marathon?" Face the sad fact that there are some obese people who don't care and resent being told that their lifestyle sucks. We, as runners, can only do what we can do. M-brew was doing his part. We should all do what we can to help those who want help. That's not to say that one of us won't wake up tomorrow but at least we're trying to give ourselves the best possible chance of it.
