Truer words were never spoken...you guys rock!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problems with education. He argued: "What's a student going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?" He reminded the other dinner
guests that it's true what they say about teachers: "Those who can do. Those who can't, teach." To corroborate, he said to another guest: "You're a teacher, Susan," he said. "Be honest. What do you make?"
Susan, who had a reputation of honesty and frankness, replied, "You want to know what I make?" "I make students work harder than they ever thought they could. I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal of Honor and an A- feel like a slap in the face if the student did not do his or her very best." "I can make students sit through 40 minutes of study hall in absolute silence." "You want to know what I make?" "I make students wonder." "I make them question." "I make them criticize." "I make them apologize and mean it." "I make them write." "I make them read, read, read."
"I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely beautiful, and
definitely beautiful over and over and over again, until they will never
misspell either one of those words again." "I make them show all their work in math and hide it all on their final drafts in English." "I make them
understand that if you have the brains, then follow your heart... and if
someone ever tries to judge you by what you make, you pay them no
attention." "You want to know what I make?" "I make a difference." "What
about you?"
Thanks, much needed today.
I hate meetings. And to some extent I hate meeting with the other music teachers in this district because all we do is complain about what's wrong with the way things are done here. So eventhough there are no students here today, it is a rather rough day.
Thanks teachers. First for educating me for all those years, and now educating my son--and doing a darn fine job. I would bring Colin's teacher the moon, if I could.
Thanks for such a neat post. This is my first reply here, and I'm glad it's to such a nice sentiment. Today was one of those standarized testing days at school, so it was much appreciated. If I could only be half that good...
Thanks G...even though I do the teaching thing part time...I had a long chat with a student's mom last night about her daughter whom I had sent a letter home on. The letter was basically saying how disappointed I was with her daughter on her lack of turning in work. Her grade has slipped because of it. The mom believed me and only said her daughter was lazy...The mom did not fault me, my methods or any of my actions. She knew I gave her daughter many chances and her daughter took advantage of me.
Wow the parent back me up... I was surprised but I had all the evidence in my favor (good po po training I guess, I documented everything!). It though was never an argument. Mom and I made a plan and the problem should be corrected.
That's a rare occurence these days. Kid messes up and the parent want to know what you did to cause it.
I hear that Steve, that was what I was prepared for but she knew, that her daughter has not been applying herself. She is a top student as far as tests go but here homework grade pulled it way down.
That's when you pull out a mirror, hold it up to them and say, "I believe I have found the cause right here....." Twisted Evil
That is one of the most frustrating things about being a therapist. The parent brings the "broken" kid in for you to fix and is often unwilling to see their part in the breaking. Makes me furious......
What a great mom! Just have to ask...what do you teach? I spent 10 years in Law Enforcement, and now teach Criminal Justice in H.S. Thought you may be doing the same.
Thanks, genie. I really needed that today.
Makes me feel guilty (well, almost) about quitting my P/T gig this coming Thursday so I can go back to school myself. Almost.
I can't wait to finish my Masters degree so I can teach part time while I work on the doctorate! I would love to teach undergrad psych in college....
