Posted: 05/02/05 - 08:44 Post subject: Thinking about buying a new house
...or maybe not.
On a lark, I stopped to look at a new subdivision that is going in right around the corner from my neighborhood.
Then, I accidentally spent all of yesterday afternoon looking at houses.
Anybody have any advice or stories about moving not-so-far away? I mean, it's fun now, but what about all the paperwork and packing/moving?
I'd give up my 1/2 acre yard for a 1/4 acre lot, but the house would be a little bigger and a quite a bit nicer inside.

If it the mortgage payments were lower, I would think about it. If they were not, I would forget about it and look at how to incorporate the neat stuff you saw in the new house into yours.

Man, if you can sell yours easily, and you want to...go for it.
The trouble with us, was selling our home...the market was saturated with homes that were newer and more expensive than ours.
It took us awhile for the right buyer to come along.

I've done the "move not so far away" twice now.
The first time was from a condo to a new house built 4 miles down the road. You don't even want to know what happened with a perfectly new mattress set that went flying off into a corn field, in the middle of the night, loaded on a small pick up truck, held down with twine!!!
That set still have road rash damage from that fiasco that I'm reminded of every time I make the bed.
No, things went well and it was a great move for us. We needed the space and it was nice being able to choose the things we wanted in the house. The move itself wasn't bad either, except the final part was done in the middle of winter. If you get enough friends involved, include beer and pizza...you'll get moved in.
Hey, you've got teenagers to help you out!!!!
My move to this house was ok. Half the stuff. Got boxes for free at the dump's recycling bin. Moved every night between the hours of 10pm and 1am. Did it in 5 days.

I don't know how much my house is worth either (yet).
One house across the street is a lot like ours, just a little smaller and it's been on the market for months at a very reasonable price.
Another house down the street a little (again, smaller than ours, but a big lot) was over priced and it sold in a week or two.

The whole process sucks, but if you really want to move GO FOR IT.
I'll give you a bit of advice tho-- there is a lot of work involved in buying a brand new home. A LOT. My number one piece of advice is:
Make dang sure they leave the yard in good condition. I'd have them sod it. It might cost a little more but its worth it. At the very least they should seed and straw it but make sure that the yard is not crap when you buy it.

I would rather live in a small house with a big yard than vice versa. But that's just me.
New construction is for the most part crap. Make sure it's a good builder.

The only time I ever go out in the yard is to mow/edge/trim the hedges. I hate having a big yard. It takes up too much time. If I had little kids, I might think differently.
