and tell me what features made it your favorite?
Food? Service? Colors? Ambience? Location?
For example, when I was a child I use to love Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor. It was the most magical place in the world. The colors, the smells, the food--it was one place I was allowed to order ice cream exactly like I wanted it. The place was huge and had a huge candy counter--the colors were red and white with wood panelling. It was fabulous. It even had a carousel horse.

Wow. I hadn't thought about Farrell's in ages. I can remember going to birthday parties there and the place was unbridled chaos to me, even as a 7 year old. Are they still around??
As for restaurants, food quality is the most important part of it, and service a close 2nd. The rest of it can be tolerated if the food and the service are up to snuff.

My favorite is probably Capitol City Grill. It's mostly seafood... which is downright awesome. I've only been there once but it was great food, great service, great atmosphere, and it was a near perfect day that I went. I almost don't want to go back and tarnish how awesome I think it is.

I really miss Balistrieri's and Jake's (in Wisconsin). I loved Balistrieri's food and service both. The owner would greet us personally.
Here, I'm kinda biased due to certain mitigating factors, but I don't know that I'd hang out there (The Elevator) as much if the service and food was not top-notch.
I think it's more service than anything. You can forgive a bad meal but not crappy service.

Dino Cassini's on 7th Ave in NYC, not far from Penn Station. When I worked in NY a long time ago, I had my initial meeting with the director of our insurance agency there and we went there for lunch at least once a week. I remember taking my now-ex there for dinner when we spent a weekend in NYC a lonnnng time ago, I don't even know if it is still there.
The owner was also the maitre'd as is the case with many city restaurants, a friendly little Italian guy who greeted everyone at the door and knew the names of all the regulars. Most fabulous fettucine alfredo on the planet, all their seafood dishes were great, and the tiramisu was to die for. Small place you'd probably not think of if someone didn't take you there, but really pretty decor, top notch service....definitely worth the trip.
