Posted: 11/27/03 - 14:53 Post subject: Things I learned today about my failed 10k
#1 coolmax, coolmax, coolmax.
Accept no imitations or look alikes. My pants stuck to my legs and my shirt (cotton knit addidas) did not breath at all.
#2 Running on a constant incline sucks!
#3 Mole skin on my arch blister only made a newer, bigger blister that I had to peel said mole skin off with
#4 Cold wind and head cold=asthma wheezing and bronchial cough
#5 I can be happy for and jealous of another person at the same time. My SIL finished the race and at a decent time to boot.
#6 Do NOT forget your water bottle and heart rate monitor at home on race day. (I actually had the chest strap on but forgot the watch.
I can not tell you how depressed I am that I bailed out. It was a very hard course and I was weak. I need to come up with a way of punishing myself that will make me better and stronger instead of weaker (ie:smoking)

Do not fret. You learned some valuable lessons. Sign up for another race as soon as possible.

We all have rotten runs. Yours just happened to be during a race. It was bound to happen sooner or later, be glad you got it out of the way.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving and tomorrow, hit the sales for some Cool Max.

Hey, it happens. I have bailed out of long training runs before.
But I agree with Joe...get back in another race--of any distance--as quickly as possible. It will restore your confidence.

Christa,
Don't get to down on it. Find yourself a couple of 5K's to run to rebuild your confidence and you will be good to go!

seems to me you're kinda sorta expecting a whole lot of yourself a little too soon maybe??? maybe?
why not try another 5K? haven't you done one already? build your confidence at these shorter runs. think short for now. i've never run a "10K" -- i'd have to really think out pacing for that distance and it seems like too much headwork to me so i stick to short and sweet.
do not beat yourself up. i hate to sound simplistic and elementary, but each failed run teaches us something, either physical or spiritual, about our running self. Use your TT as a learning experience....you'll be a better runner for it. (your list already shows that process)
i say congratulations for even hitting the start line.

Sorry to hear of your troubles Chirsta. Seems as if you learned a few things. Like the others said, try not to get discouraged. Lace the shoes back up and try it again. You now have more motivation to do better the next time

I sooo agree with rolling rock. Stick with a shorter distance for now and build up your confidence. When you've got a few more of those under your belt, then you'll have the experience to tackle a 10K.
PS - For my first half marathon, I wore cotton boxers, cotton shorts and a ploy/cotton blend t-shirt. The look on my face when I crossed the finish line was priceless. I felt like I had invented a new sport - XtremChafing!

See how much you learned in one race!
I'm not downplaying your disappointment; we all have setbacks. I agree with everyone else's advise.

200+ races and heck, I'm still learning things. That's makes it a lifetime sport.. a good thing, really.
Your story makes me think of a quote I was contemplating this morning out in the wind and ice.. "That which does not kill me, makes me stronger"

These are all valuable things to have learned. It's not a total loss! Hang in there it gets better. But just remember there are always good days and bad days.

Like everyone said, you'll have good days and bad days. After you get a few more races under your belt it'll get easier, and the sense of pride and accomplishment you'll get after completing a 10K after this experience wil be overwhelming.

Sorry to hear, Christa...but you got some darn good advice from everyone here.
I ran a bunch of 5Ks before I even thought about running a 10, and it did indeed help me both physically and mentally.
Can't wait to hear about your next race. You're gonna do it!!!
