Charon orbits around Pluto. It. Is. A. Moon.
By their logic, our moon should also be a planet.
These doofi should leave well enough alone.

actually the ratio of size is the issue on that. Charon and pluto are too close in size.
note the Solar system has never been set in stone, Pluto was only discover in 1930, Ceres was considered a planet one other time in the 80's (i think) then demoted again. then planet x was discovered in the 90's(i think) remember the word "planet" is greek for "wanderer" because while the stars stayed in a fixed location (so to speak) these other bodies seemed to move around without a pattern.

shouldn't they be putting their efforts into something a little more productive like say oooh i don't know - charting other solar systems?

they are working on that, but don't you think it would be good to have a standard on what a planet is in our own backyard before we go trying to mess up other texts books about other solar systems?
it's hard to spot planets still in other solar systems, they don't go my a visual but a "wobble" in the solar systems star to detect planets. our visual abilties aren't good enough to see the planet due to a few reasons, distance, and being "whiteout" by the star being the main culprits.
