This is a bit early for hurricane season. We are totally unprepared other than tons of water, Gatorade, wine, and candles.

Well, we technically have a mandatory evacuation at the resort (and at all resorts, for that matter) but last year I know there was at least one other resort here that took guests when the other resorts kicked them out, as long as they signed a waiver. I didn't work here last year so I guess I'll find out what we do.

This is just a test. It'll get everybody prepared, or not.
Ride it out safe, and if they kick you out, come visit.

I'd invite you to come stay with me, but it rained so much here yesterday/this morning that you might as well stay in FL.

You florida people have lived this much more, esp recently, than we do in coastal Texas, therefore this may only apply to us, but....
Kristin, don't you find the hype surrounding tropical storms to be very similar to the hype around snowfall in (in my case Kentucky) Ohio? Both from the local residents and the meteorolgists. That is to say, many of the warnings are definitely something to take seriously, both winter and tropical storms. But so often they take the hype and run with it in some sort of ratings war, and then people buy into it, and then when it turns out its not "the big one" people take storms less seriously.....In Kentucky we used to joke: "this snow report was brought to you by Kroger, who just raised prices on bread and milk...." because all they had to say was "chance of flurries" there and there was a rush to the store. Or, here, the fact that we can have a lead story of a tropical storm in the gulf that is near Jamaica and has no intentions to come anywhere near us amuses me. For example, whatever just hit Louisiana (Cindy? I don't remember) was in the gulf somewhere around the Yucatan and definitely headed NE (not near us) on the 4th of July. We had reporters on the beach tormenting tourists by asking them "what do you think of the TS in the gulf?" almost every one of their responders, drunk "uhhh....I don't care? Happy Birthday America!!!!!!!"
I'm sick and twisted and will probabyl die a painful hurricane induced death...carry on....

Cheryl, I think that there IS a lot of hype around the storms by the media. They play it up really big and scare the crap out of people. It really pisses off people in the hospitality industry because, well, because their customers get evacuated, sometimes unnecessarily early and they lose so much business that is desperately needed in the off-season. It does remind of of the news when we used to get snowstorms in Columbus, OH.
The newscasters really focus on empty store aisles, traffic out of the Keys, etc. It's more than a little annoying and I think it stresses people out more. The traffic is already bumper to bumper heading northeast today.

No different than the talk about California getting "the big one" or the Midwest or New England getting this week's "storm of the century" every other week in winter.

And its only fueled by a strong storm one time. I can only imagine what all the tv meteorologists in Fl are doing since legit storm Ivan.
In kentucky we got a blizzard over MLK jr weekend one year that dumped around 24-26 inches on poor unprepared Louisville then proceeded to stay at around 20 below for a week, further paralyzing the city. The original forecast: Flurries. The 'winter storm of '94' was then alluded to in nearly every winter forecast for the next 3-4 years "of course we're saying flurries but...". Oh please, the low today is 44 degrees.
