the first graders who really don't do very well This is such a tough class. I had most of them last year in Kindergarten and they really don't seem to have improved much. We're taking a practice test today, just to help them with the real test the next time I see them.

3 questions: #1 has a pic of a xylophone with 2 bars on it. they have to color the bar they hear played first (differentiate high and low sounds.)
#2. choose the rhythm you hear: 2 lines of simple rhythms either all quarter notes (say "shoe") or eighth notes (say "cobbler")
#3. same as above, but 3 options, and the "cobbler" and "shoe" are mixed together.

They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa.
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa.
To the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time and I'll be happy
to see those nice young men in their clean white coats and they're coming
to take me away, ha-haaa!!!
To the happy home, with trees and flowers and chirping birds and basket
weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes and they're
coming to take me away, ha-haa!!!
To the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time... (fade out)
Hey, buddy!
Yes officer..
You a head?
No, but I'm catching up, ha ha ha....

well, they did better than I expected them too, but it took a lot of TLC to pull it off. spoonfeeding them the answers. the only way I could have made it easier on them is to take the test for them.

Blame the people who don't want to fund Head Start.
