The huricane is coming right in my back door. I live 5 miles WEST of the beach. With an 18 foot storm surge, the water will almost make my place. They have closed my office on Friday so we can prepare.
I'm getting a little worried.
BTW I live on the 27.4th parallel. the Cane is at 21.8.

5 miles.... 5 short miles.
This thing is gonna flatten the whole area. The population where I live is 60% retired. They will have it worse then everybody else.
The only good thing, if you can call it good, is people learned from Andrew. The codes are so strict that we have a better chance of the buildings staying put now. But nodoy builds a building to withstand 140 mph winds and gusts over 165.
The preperation is happening. The schools are closing and they are getting ready for the evacuees. The boards are going over windows all over town and the the general feeling of dread has started. The air is electric with nervous anticipation.

No kidding. I could retire on what my company spent for hurricane testing in FL.

I dunno about the whole building, but you'd be surprised how much a good roof deck can withstand.

FL Board of Education has a requirement that portions of almost all new schools built have a designated 'hurricane shelter' as a section of the building that will remain watertight after hurricane 'missle'* impact.
* missle, in the case of a roof deck = 2 x 4 shot out of a cannon

The general rule is go to a shelter or stay put. They really don't want you on the road when the cane comes. Sometimes people evacuate one area and they forcast the whole thing wrong and people actually drive into the storm.
The Red Cross has volunteers that spend countless hours preparing places like schools, warehouses, police stations to become temporary shelters. The work they do is incredible.
The clean up prior to the cane is the most important thing. Getting the weak tree limbs down and all those freaking coconuts off the trees. The yards have to be cleaned and things brought in. Anything you leave out will become a missile. Especially the coconuts. All the things I have outside will be put in my spare bedroom/office.
Since the power will likely go out early, people are stocking up on batteries, water and potables. Canned food, bread and things that can be eaten without prep are GONE. The shelves are picked clean.
Storm shutters are going up all over town. You would think I live in a broken down slump of an area with all the buildings boarded.

I live just below the Saturday purple dot. About 30 miles by my guess. Just above the 27th parallel.
