Yeah, for realz. And if you can believe it, involving yet another missing finger part.
We have a walking track upstairs at the gym that is also used for a few classes. There are several pieces of home exercise equipment, bikes, a couple steppers, etc. that people sometimes ride to warm up before class, after class, or during class if they can't do certain exercises for what ever reason. Some adults bring there kids to this class which we have always permitted. Sometimes they bring a ball to play, a color book, a snack and sometimes they exercise along with the class and their parent. This one little girl who is about 5ish and is very active has been coming with her Mom for a couple years. She sometimes would play on the bikes and stuff and her Mom as well as the instructor or myself had told her many times to stay off the stuff. So last night she apparently was "screwing around" according to her Mom and the next thing ya know she is missing the tip of her finger!!!!! She was by the bike in the pedal, chain area so apparently she lost it there. We found it and took it to the ER but it was pretty small and mangled anyway and they could do nothing with it. No bone or anything, just the very tip. Our attorney was called at home and we were told not to offer anything but compasion at this point. The Mom readily addmitted the little girl was doing something she shouldn't have and had been told several times not to do. If there is a claim our insurance will pay it I'm sure. We have never had any claims in nearly 6 years.
I feel very bad for the little girl don't get me wrong. However, I worked 13 hours yesterday and left the gym about 6pm and this happened about 6:40pm. I am absolutely furious that my employee didn't even call me!!!!WTF?????

I hope she is OK. Sounds like more of a scare then long term physical damage.
It sounds like today you will be review emergancy escalation procedures.

So sorry to hear of this accident, defintiely time to crack down/enforce and develop stricter controls over children on the gym floor and in and around the athletic equipment. Having children on the gym floor and not in a segregated child care area will create the real potential for these types of injuries in the future as well. Obviously, it will be for the improved safety of everyone.
(did I mention that I am a Loss Control (safety geek) Consultant for an Insurance Company!!)
I hope the mother is considering this an accident that she is partially to blame for and is not looking for a quick buck from you.

Children at our gym are not allowed to be in the workout area/TM's/ellipticals...etc. However, every now and then a parent will let their child roam on the way to the rock climbing wall. I've been running on the TM and watched these "roamers" crawl around on the floor behind the TM's that are going reaching at the moving belt. I get so angry!!! Why do they let this happen? I usually get off the TM and tell a worker right away. Get them out of my area!!! I can't stand to see a child get hurt!
Sorry for this. You might want to rethink letting the kids upstairs there now. Too much liability...IMO.

Install a cage and lock the little ones up. They've no business roaming around a gym and the parents that allow this need their asses kicked.

I don't really think the Mom is looking to blame and collect big bux from us. Also, children are not allowed in the gym area around the equipment period. We do have a children's room. This happened in a huge room upstairs where classes are held and children are permitted in this area with adult supervision. This lady is not a gym member and attends only this class which she pays to attend. Her husband is a pastor at a local church. And no it's not Mr. Hurlbut. And happy2tri I didn't know that was your job.
They said at the ER also that it didn't appear to damage any nerve endings in the finger. Good news.

Sorry about the kid, but I'm pretty much a stickler about keeping them away from my equipment supervised or not.
