We drove down to Big Pine Key and saw about 20 Key Deer, in groups and loners. The adults are the size of a large German Shepherd and the faun we saw was about 35 pounds and about 2 feet high. As soon as I get pictures back, I will post them. These are really cool animals. Minute replicas of a white-tailed deer. (No, rob, you cannot hunt these. They would be useless for meat and are protected). You are not allowed to feed or touch them. Obviously people have, as they wander up to your car door and are unafraid of vehicles and humans.
The whole island of Big Pine Key is basically a Key Deer refuge. The place is huge, and desolate. It's at least 8 miles wide (don't laugh; "our" island is about 1/4 mile across). There was nothing but hurricane damaged dry brush and a few scattered homes and small mobiles as we drove further out and into Big Torch Key. I was afraid of a scraggly-bearded man in a wife-beater, shotgun in hand appearing and taking us hostage (for what, I don't know, because we have no money.)
The resort was lovely, but noisy, as the wind picked up Saturday night and it was reminiscent of Wilma screeching around the windows (sans shutters, torn off in Wilma). If you like to fish, this would be a GREAT place to go in the Keys. Dozens of fisherpeople sat on the old wooden bridge (one of the remains of Henry Flagler's railroad before the hurricane of 1935 destroyed the majority of the structure, along with the people who built it) in the morning, and boats were out shrimping at night under the same bridge.
We went to a bar called the "No-Name Pub" for delicious, grease dripping from your chin pizza. The sign outside proclaims "A Great Place if You can Find It". The establishment was packed with locals, and they were nice enough to let us bring in our own bottle of champagne with no corkage fee (they only served beer and jug'o'wine). We tipped to compensate. The place is wallpapered in dollar dills. We gave them one of our own to hang, and as they rang the bell, I thought "A piece of us is left someplace else in the Keys".
The bad thing? We left a movie at the resort. It wasn't too bad, but they are sending it back in a brown paper wrapper.
One another interesting Keys note, the restaurant that moved us down here and then screwed us royally has lost its liquor license, perhaps permanently, for yet another non-payment of sales taxes.
We're really glad that Larry did not take that job now. That's why the reasons that the crazy owner fired him. He started digging into the financial records and found out that they had paid no sales taxes since 2002. She said it was because she had changed her mind, but who changes their minds after blowing $15,000 on moving expenses for the GM from a top ten restaurant in a major city.
Seeing as how we couldn't find an attorney down here to represent us (they had all been involved with the family's criminal dealings and drug-smuggling, which we did not find out about until much later) I feel that some sort of justice may have been served. I am not going to gloat. but I am having a Nelson (from the Simpsons) moment. "Ha-ha".

I'm sure the resort people had a Nelson moment as well.

If you do, please let me know so that we can meet up and buy you drinks at Morada Bay or Pierre's. (The wedding photos were from Pierre's.)
You might like The Islander Resort. Newly renovated, and that's where the wedding pool pics were taken.

At least it was not a Brittsny Spears movie, or that hideous Paris Hilton thing.
It's their fault. They told us that there was a DVD player in the bedroom!
We're usually good sweepers.

If we decide we can afford it I will get in touch with you.

Cool. The Islander is actually quite affordable, and we can get you "local" rates, which are about $20 a night less than regular rates. Also, the La Jolla is also nice.

You should bring them down here now, before it turns into condo-tel hell and is still affordable for a family. You can swim with dolphin, and Larry's restaurant has a HUGE beach with white sand for the kids. I know a lot about resorts here, and since I am local can get you local rates (for a week, that's about $140.00 in savings. That might not be much to you, but it is to me!)
Let me knoiw. I miss real people.
