had mine out 10 years ago. Lap is a piece of cake. My mother had hers out almost 30 years ago and they opened her up from her sternum to past her belly button. 
I had a fever so I got to stay overnight and couldn't wait to go home because they wouldn't stop checking my vitals and they wouldn't feed me anything solid 
You'll be amazed at how much better you will feel.
