So, following my half marathon performance in May, I was motivated and thought I could springboard that into a good half time this fall, and then prepare myself for a full next year.

Well, four days after the Brookings half, I was invited to play soccer with some of the other youth soccer coaches. I wasn't gonna do it, but my kids heard about it, and begged me to play. So, I played.

Probably 10 minutes from going home, I rolled my left ankle, bad. So bad, that the next morning I could not stand on it, and ended up going to the clinic. Turns out I tore 2 of the 3 sets of ligaments.

I was given a brace to wear, and told to stay off it as much as possible. I wore the brace all day, every day for two weeks. The third week, I wore it in the morning and afternoon, but took it off in the evenings.

A full four and a half weeks after the injury I tried to run four miles. My foot went completely numb below the ankle after about two miles. I figured I should wait...and tried it again a week later, same thing.

So then...I waited awhile to run, and then ran shorter distances...two and three miles only. 3 miles it bothered me some.

Finally...mrs coach convinced me to see a chiropractor about the numbness in my foot. He tells me not to run more than 15 minutes...and to wait a full six weeks. This was 3 weeks ago.

The half I really wanted to run is this weekend. I've signed up to run the 5K with coachette, and coach jr. again. It's really dissappointing.

And I hate running only two miles. I'm barely going, and then, I'm done. I've barely been running because I don't like it.

I'm actually afraid I might not be able to keep up with my kids.

I know many of you have suffered much worst than this, and I really shouldn't complain. The only other injury I have suffered is a case of Achilles Tendonitis back in 2002. I took six weeks off, and it was done.

Here it is, nearly 4 months later, and I'm so frustrated.

Sorry, had to vent.

Hang in there buddy. I've got more zero weeks in the running column these past few years than I care to admit. There's just nothing better than time though to get through most any ailment. If you can get out pedalling or swimming or something that keeps the cardio-vascular from going to pot, there's no reason this winter couldn't still become the base you need for a good 26.2 next year.
And don't forget some strengthening work on that ankle. You're the coach, so you know what to do, but dangit man, dooo it. Wink
