Posted: 12/18/03 - 12:11 Post subject: The programs are done
Both schools have finished their christmas music programs as of 25 minutes ago! That's a big relief for me!
Good with the Bad: this morning's program was scheduled for 10am. The teacher whose class comes to music at that time was mad at me because I could not take her class at that time and so she says to me "you mean I just lose my prep?" I looked at her and said, "I just lost mine getting ready for this program" My "prep" was at 9:25 and I spent it getting the stage ready and supervising my chorus students. It's Christmas, how about spreading some good will??

she's not the only one who would do that. Every program I do, I have something like that happen here.
It also happens with holiday parties, and so tomorrow afternoon I'll have a class in here during the last period (when they should be having a party) because that teacher wants her (contractually guaranteed) prep period. so let's stop the party and go to music class because the adult wants 35 minutes away from her students.

more trouble with that this morning. The teacher wanted me to take her students with another class (double up) which is against the contract, not to mention nearly impossible to control 50 kids in a small space. I turned her down. She went to the principal. He came to me and I let him know exactly how I felt. I lost my prep to prepare for the concert, technically I should not have had kids to supervise in that 35 minutes, but I had them to get ready for the program. I also told him that it pi$$es me off that she would act that way, when all she had to do was sit on her @$$ for 45 minutes during my program. This teacher also reportedly went to the building union rep about it. So I made tracks to the rep too.
Merry Christmas to you, Bah Humbug.

This is sooo much like my life as a pe teacher, I'd laugh if I wasn't crying.
You got it Steve, stop the party and go to PE...and then come back and resume the party?
You're just watching a movie anyway...would it kill you...I'd go on...but I can't...

I will be the first to admit that I could not possibly know the value of prep time as I am not a teacher, but it kinda bewilders me that she's getting all PMSy about this lack of 35 minutes (or whatever) when it's the last day of school before break where she will be away from the kids for what, 2 weeks? (I'm assuming of course that this is the last day, maybe it isn't for you teachers).
Sorry you're dealing with this not-so-jolly little elf today.

Sounds like your administration needs to get a spine. Either find someone to watch her class for her during the program so she can have her prep, or tell her this is "duties otherwise assigned". We all go to ARD meetings etc.. during our conference period, it seems supervising students during an assembly would count.
Someone needs to get out of teaching...
