Ok, I'm posting in another forum that I avoid like the plague. I avoid this forum because I just don't understand anything about hashing. I don't understand anything about it. I don't understand the specifics or the interest.
Maybe I should learn at least something.
What exactly is hashing?
What is the point/goal/objective?
What is haring?
What does it mean when you get snared?
Where do you hash?
most importantly, Why?

What exactly is hashing?
Hashing is based off a British Kids game called Fox and Hounds. A person or persons (the Hare) lay a trail of flour with the trail being unknown to the main pack of runners. The Hare is supposed to makes the chase hard so it goes thru some pretty rough stuff at times, like brairs, streams, rocky ledges. all this bad stuff you would never run in on your own is call Shiggy
What is the point/goal/objective?to get drunk ok the game part is: the Lead runner (hare) tries to confuse the runner enough that they can get to the end point of the trail and not get caught, snared, all the while they have to leave a trail of flour and symbols i e a scent trail
The pack or Kennel tries to catch or snare the hare.
What is haring? the act of leading the run and making a trail.
What does it mean when you get snared? it means the kennel caught you
Where do you hash? better question is where DON'T you Hash. Hashing can be done pretty much anywhere
most importantly, Why?one it's a social thing and humans are social creatures, two it keeps it fresh, not the same scenery run after run. and three BEEEER. after the Run is when the main antics begin, think of it as a running frat Party that has ended at the Frat House and you'l ge tthe idea.

Jenn, to me the point is basically to make running a little more interesting and fun. It's fun to be following a trail. It's sort of like a grown up game of hide and go seek, sort of. Every hash group is a little different. Not all of them are big drinking groups. I've run with 4 or 5 of them and they have all been very different from each other.
The main objective is the social aspect and the running with the drinking being secondary. We (the hashers) just sort of focus on it as the topic of our songs and trash talking because it's fun to do. There are a lot of hashers that don't drink alcohol at all, only water or pop.
It's not for everyone, but I can say that it put the life back into running for me. I love it and have made some of the best friends I've ever had as a result

Oh, and when you get snared... it means the kennel, or hounds caught you... and that can have consequences depending on the group you are with.
They can either take over for you and they can lay the rest of the trail.
The trail can just end.
They can lay trail with you.
They can dump the rest of the flour over your head.
or..... (my personal favorite) they depants the hares.
it depends on what kennel you are hashsing with..... check with the Grand Master before the hash starts.... (the grand master is like the club president).

Most definitely. I don't feel so out of the loop now. I had absolutely no idea what hashing was/is about. Now it doesn't seem so foreign and it might be something I'd try one day.
Thank you!

Well, some hashes are more debauched than others.
Ironically, Sin City H4 doesn't seem to be a haven for debauchery.
