Posted: 11/11/05 - 10:00 Post subject: The life of an otherwise healthy child...
| Quote: | A team of doctors in South Florida are prepared to help a young girl who has a rare 16-pound tumor growing on her face if enough money is raised to help the child, according to a Local 6 News report.
Doctors said when Marlie Casseus was born, she looked like any other girl. But a tumor formed and as she grew so did the tumor. She was recently diagnosed with Polyostotic Fibrous Dysplasia.
Polyostotic Fibrous Dysplasia has not only deformed her face, but severely affected her respiratory system.
The painful tumor now engulfs her face and is endangering her life, according to the report.
A team of doctors in Miami are ready to help the 14-year-old girl but they have to wait until enough money is raised to pay for her hospital stay.
The family is asking people to donate to Marlie's cause by donating to the International Kids Fund.
If you would like to help, click International Kids Fund. Marlie is the month's featured child.
The operation is expected to cost about $95,000.

I tend to be a moderate politically, but really: Where is Jeb Bush now?? He is so hot to save a life....what is he waiting for?
All they need is money--which they were willing to spend on court battles--please. Someone correct me if I'm am wrong. Please tell me Jeb is stepping up to the plate on this one. Please.

So much for hospitals never turning away anyone who needs life-saving medical care.

Let's fight for someone who is brain dead, yet ignore a child with a horrible disfigurement that can be fixed. We are one screwed up people.

I wonder why the hospital charities wont underwrite the stay. I am sure all of the docs are donating their time and services. I am sure people will step up and pay for the care.
I can't believe it is not covered by insurance.
FWIW Angie, this is a whole heck of a lot different than a brain damaged person. Money was never the issue there. Here it is.

I understand your point--but the bottom line is still the same moral issue is at stake: saving someone's life. Although that was and still is a horrific case--all that money they wanted to pour into a long court battle could be used for this innocent child.
And where is Jeb now? I just want him to be proclaiming this little girl's life just as loudly as he did the other lady. Her life is as much in jeopardy--and she could use some "heavyweights" fighting for her.

$95, 000 for a life saving surgery is not all that much in comparison to many other major medical procedures. Crap, Larry's hips with the surgery and other pre-surgical care over the last year while he he was waiting for surgery cost at least that, but the insurance company finally took care of the bulk of it. (And, BTW, IF the stupid insurance company would have not had the pre-existin req in place, they would have spent FAR less on the whole situation. Morons. same thing as will happen with my feet. Sorry we're helping to raise your premiums. Oh wait, it's not us, it's them. )
I cannot believe that this poor child is being denied surgery that can save her life. If her respiratory system is in danger, then what is the issue with waiting? It's no longer cosmetic!!!. That's f'ing pathetic. Again, so much for the "no one is denied healthcare if necessary" mentality in this country. If she was in Europe or Canada, or any other industrialized country in the world other than the US or South Africa, she would have had this taken care of before it got to this point.
I think I can figure out a way to e-mail this pic to the idiot governor of our state. I doubt that self-absorbed shpose even knows how to read e-mail.)

I dont understand why she is just not operated on and the money is worried about later. There has to be more to this story.
If the child is on welfare, there has to be a reason the child is not covered or it is not being paid.
Any life threatening condition should be covered.

found my own answers.
She is a citizen of Haiti as well.
| Quote: | | Marlie does not have medical insurance and her family cannot afford the cost of the treatment. In addition, since she is not a U.S. citizen or resident, Holtz Children's Hospital, part of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, is prohibited by law to tap into publicly funded resources to treat her. |

There is a program in Georgia that provides Medicaid assistance to non-citizens, but I don't know if a similar program exists in Florida. It's called Emergency Medical Assistance (EMA).
As long as she met the other criteria for public assistance, she'd be covered as soon as her condition became life threatening.

Now, that just sucks for her. I don't know if such a program exists here or not. If I were to wager (and this is only my opinion until I can find time to research), I would say no. I hope I am wrong, but FLorida has a huge number of legal and illegal "aliens" (for lack of a better word) and a very conservative government. People can just fall to the wayside.

That's not a bad idea. I've heard more than a few stories from a lot of our staff, who are techically legal (they have the papers) about the way that they and their families are treated in hospitals in South Florida. It's not pretty. If it was only one or two people telling me, I's be suspect. It's more like twenty. One guy went through hell with his wife, who was having a baby, and was in labor. They thought he had stolen/forged his insurance card, because "these damn Mexicans don't have insurance". Meanwhile, not two days before, the property manager's wife (they are both Caucasian, American citizens) had no problems at the same hospital. Thankfully, both mothers and babies are fine.
Again, that's not the only complaint that I have heard.
I feel bady for this little girl. Do you know what kind of coverage news-wise that her case is getting, Aire? The media can be dramatic enough about other issues. Perhaps more coverage other than what is being done through the ICF might help this child. If I had any money, I'd help. I can donate a small amount, but it's not much.
