This was the topic of a great many brawls over at CR a while back and I can't remember if we ever talked about it here or not, so.....it's been on my mind lately and I thought I'd bring it up for thoughts.

Mageline posted a thread denouncing the statement "a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle" and of course all the feminists over there, myself included at the time, got incensed at the thought that we had to "need" a man, or anyone in our lives to feel complete, and agreed wholeheartedly with the statement. I'd put this out to both the mins and wimmins.....what do you think, for yourself? If you have an SO, how do you feel about this (substitute woman for man or whatever applies to you)? If not, same thing.....are you OK with being single right now? I'm really interested to see what this gang thinks, so I'll reserve my ever fluctuating viewpoint for later. Have at it.....

Hmmm...but does that count as need or want?

Ladies, anyone remembering the original discussion, feel free to jump in.

I don't know. It feels good, and I really would rather not spend a whole lotta time figuring out why being with him feels good. If you get to close to the painting, you can't see the pretty colors anymore and all you end up with is paint on your nose.

I kinda like that theory. I know when the original thread went up I was firmly on the camp of "I don't need anyone, anyhow, to make me happy....." but now that I am with someone I really care about, it is good and I do feel like I can't imagine my life without him in it. Not that I'm nobody without him, but that I'd rather have him here than not. But I'm not so far gone that I'd die if it ended either, and I think I am feeling a little guilty about that, but I am not sure why that is.

BB, whazzup, yo? That doesn't sound so good.

Every time you post anything I imagine it said in Beaker's voice. It's very disconcerting.

Now that I couldn't live without. The bicycle, definitely. The man, on certain days, yep, him too.....but fish? It's brain food, low in fat and mighty tasty. Nope, if I could only take one of the three to a deserted island......

I think in every relationship, there is one partner that loves/needs more than the other. I think when the pendulum swings too much to one-side, it'll break. When the pendulum switches sides, it can be a whole different perpective, or time to get new batteries.

I don't need a man to make me complete or to give my life meaning, but at some point, I would like to have another one in my life. Need? I guess in some way, yes. I need to love and be beloved. The children are great and I love them dearly and they are my world, but soon I will be without them--too soon as any parent can attest. A good man in my life at some point would be fabulous.

Besides, the right man can beat anything battery operated. Wink

The right woman can make a guy feel like a better person (and sometimes make him act like it too Mr. Green ).

I don't think it's need though. I mean we would go on living,...but there would be certain things that you'd know would be more enjoyable if they were with you (especially the naughty and the Twisted Evil ).

It shames me to say that I don't need a man. Yes, the comfort of having two incomes and someone to share my life with is wonderful and I would never do anything to make that change, but were I to find myself without a partner tomorrow I think I would be just fine. I have a strong independent streak, and my hubby knows that. If he goes away for more than a few days he gets under me feet once he's home. I adjust very quickly to being a one person household.
* I don't have children, so that uncomplicates my situation by about 1000%.

Don't feel shamed. Nothing wrong with being an independent woman.
