Some of you know that a part-time training buddy of mine was one of the original Ironmen ( http://vnews.ironmanlive.com/vnews/topstories/1065474658 ). He did 5 of the first 6 Ironmans and hasn't done that distance since.

He and his family got flown back to Kona in 2003 for the 25th anniversary of the first IM where he was in a parade and some of the festivities. While he was there, some of his family got a wild hair and talked to the RD for Kona and he agreed to let my buddy plus 4 other family members come back to do Kona this year under the special interest category so none of them have to qualify.

How nutty is that? The only one of them that's done that distance is my buddy and he's 60 or 61. Shocked

Wow!
This was some story.

I bet that he is very proud to be a part of IM history.
I'm sure it'll be hard for him to give that bike away as well.
However, it's for a good cause.

Thanks for sharing this. Smile

You call it a "wild hair", I think they need mental evaluations! Wink What a tough family. I hope they do well, and given your buddies history, I bet they will all do fine.

Wow! What a cool family! I just hope I can remember where I put my walker when I am 60... Wink

(I think you have to be made of pretty tough stuff to do an IM. I don't think I have that stuff...)

Sorry, that link isn't about my buddy (Henry Forrest), he's just mentioned in the story about 3/4 of the way down.
