Posted: 09/26/04 - 14:12 Post subject: The drunk driving video, you seen it?
Here's the situation, it kinda pissed me off. Maybe I'm overreacting, imagine that.
When I had drivers ed, During the classroom part we had to watch a graphic movie about the effects of drunk driving. It was real crash scenes showing dead people and all that. We were told if we didn't want to watch to just quietly put our head down on our desks. That's what I did. I do not watch horror movies or anything like that period. Never have , never will, don't like it. I still remember hearing the kids in class react to the graphic pictures of the movie. One kid puked in class.
So fast forward to last week. My son is in drivers ed as many of you know. A note came home about a meeting for parents regarding the class and what is expected of your child and when your child will be driving with the teacher. I intended on going until I found out by accident that the graphic drunk driving video would be shown at the meeting. WTF??? I was really mad. As an adult I know the cause and effect of drunk driving. Should they show the video to my son's class??? Absolutely! Should they play it for me unannounced at the drivers ed meeting for parents?? I say hell no! At the very least the note should have said the video would be shown at the end of the meeting. Those wanting to watch could stay, if not you may leave.
I told hubby he could go and he did. I would not go. I wanted to call and tell them of my disgust at the school but I haven't. Yet.
What do you guys think?? Did you see a video like this when you were in drivers ed??

Don't remember if I did or not. If I did, it obviously didn't make an impression.

I remember having to sit through at least 2 of them. As I recall, it is no worse than any of the slasher movies that so many kids watch. Not that it justifies showing the video. I didn't like the video or the slasher movies, but I doubt that the drunk driving video can have much effect on the students who have become immune to such gore from the movies.

I remember sitting through a PG version of the movie in HS driver's ed.
I would hope that if they plan on showing a movie such as that, the parents be informed, and if necessary sign off on it.

Yes, I totally agree. And I want my son to see it. I didn't think it appropriate to make me watch it now though, unless it was my choice.

For some reason, we never had to see that when I took Drivers' Ed.
As far as the 'surprise' showing, I will say I have no problem with its being shown. Not all parents may have had to see that stuff when they took classes.* And, in a way, it makes sense to have shown it unannounced - you don't plan to be in an accident, either. Makes more of an impact (pun not intended).
* - Question (for anyone) - if you took lessons through a driving school instead of taking a class in high school, did they show you the crash movie too?

I only barely remember driver's ed. I do remember a gory-type drunk driving movie, but really, it had no more effect than the Freddy Krueger movie that came out around the same time. Freddy was scarier.
(Speaking as someone with kids) I think it's very hard to convince kids of their vulnerability. We lost 6-8 kids in my graduation class (of 500+) due to car accidents, usually high speed and/or alcohol. Kids think nothing can touch them. I was felt pretty much the same way at the time. I drank alot, drove too fast, and drove while I was impaired. I'm just glad I didn't hurt myself or anyone else during this time frame.
