PostPosted: 07/31/06 - 08:58    Post subject: The (ugly) Richard B. Russell Duathlon Report
Preface :: I injured my right calf in the middle of last week and couldn't/wouldn't run on it before the race. I'd planned on just doing the first run and the bike and then quitting. No reason to run an extra 10K on an injured calf.

Breakfast :: Coffee, 2 granola bars and a bag of Skittles.

The Drive :: Got off course and ended up getting to the race with only 1/2 and hr. to spare.

The Race :: 5K run / 22 mi. bike / 10K run - my longest event EVAR!

The first run wasn't too bad. Felt OK although the humidity was a little high. A guy I had talked to before the race said something to me during this run that later convinced me I should run the whole race. First 5K in 19:08 for a 6:10 pace.

In and out of T1.

The bike was OK. I got totally demoralized though. I think I only passed 1 or 2 people but it felt like I got passed by about 30 people (one of the was Coach Carole Wink ). Not too hilly, but not too flat. No wind that I can recall. I felt like I was going faster, but my time was 1:05:09 (20.26 MPH avg.)

In and out of T2.

The second run was quite possibly the worst mistake I've ever made racing. By 2 miles in, my left hip hurt, both calved hurt and my PF was acting up. The sun was coming up more and the shade that was there for the first run was going away rapidly. I lost a little time because I stopped for water (which I never do). I can't run and drink at the same time, so I stopped at 4 of the water stations for a drink. Total time for the 10K was 45:09 for a 7:17 pace.

Splits :: 5: - 19:08 / 22 mi. - 1:05:09 / 10K - 45:09 + transitions :: Total time 2:11:23 - 9th OA and 5th in my AG.

My goal for this race was 2 hrs. of racing + transition time. So, sub 20 5K, sub 1 hr. bike and roughly a 40 min. 10K. Only hit one of those goals. Sad

Obligatory pic ::

For what it's worth: I can't run and drink either. But I learned that in college.

Gutting it out on a bad leg and in the heat, you came out of it with quite good results. Don't knock yourself. thumbs up

Talking yourself through a race in the heat is very hard, adding an injury on top of that and you ran a really great race. Your 10k time is what my goal time for that distance is this year all by itself, on a cool day without running and cycling beforehand Razz

great job PH.

Dancing Banana

7:19 pace in the 10K is great considering it was the last leg and you were puttin' up with some stuff.

Pardon the Poli Sci major coming out in me here. Richard Russell as in the US Senator from Georgia back when? Is that the location of the event or something?

It was the name of the state park we raced in/around.

Great job PH. I really wish I could find a regular duathalon closer to me down here so I can try one. Even if I have to compete in the fat tire division.
