It's not something that really needs to be taught. Ease off the clutch as you're pushing the gas. Steadiness is key. Just go to an abandoned parking lot and practice starting and stopping until your left calf can't take it anymore.

I'd of course need a vehicle to do this with. I doubt any of my neighbors would let me practice with theirs.

You'd be surprised. Just remind them that you will never be able to DD without being able to drive a stick.

I'm not sure I understand the value of a manual transmission. I know a car is cheaper to buy when it's stickshift, but the cost of replacing the clutch, which I understand happens at least once in the lift of a car, isn't cheap. Is there another part to it I'm missing?
Oh, and I don't judge men on their car ability. I use other standards.

Being able to pull up to a stop sign on a steep hill, completely stop and then restart w/o stalling or hopping the front end of the vehicle all over the road is also part of the test. Being able to get rubber in at least three gears is a confirmation of dude shifting skills.... |
I pass that test, so I guess I meet dude qualifications.

Yes! It's way fun. It's easier to control speed/acceleration in the mountains. But it does suck in traffic.
CUrrently I drive an automatic for the purposes of traffic, but if I lived somewhere with less congestion I would definintely have a manual transmission.

Translation: never own a standard in Houston. My dad talked me out of buying one and I'm so glad.

It is definitely a plus in the mountains. My car had no clue what was going on when I drove in the mountains. My friend is from Costa Rica which is pretty mountainous, and the roads can be much steeper. Over there everyone drives a stick because automatic transmissions last a few months.
