http://www.universityrelations.und.edu/logoappeal/openletter_6-07-06.html
It's a great letter from the President of the University of North Dakota to the NCAA.
The NCAA has told the university to get rid of the Indian name and mascot (they have no mascot by the way). Yet, the NCAA allows FSU to keep the Seminole name. UND has permission from the Sioux tribe in fact and many members go to UND.
I love the jab near the end in that Pontiac is a big NCAA corporate sponsor. But the NCAA has no problem with the fact that Pontiac was a legendary chief of the Ottawa tribe.

The same controversy was floating around the AF for awhile--they wanted to end all symbolism between Chiefs and Indian Chiefs. About 2 people said it was derogatory.
How? Supposedly they're both warriors?
Same with sports teams. You name yourself after someone you'd like to emulate and you are proud of their qualities.
I don't understand though, why one team is allowed while another is not.

Here's the reason FSU keeps the Seminole and NDSU Can't keep the Sioux Warrior:
MONEY !!!!! Who do you think brings more money to the NCAA ?

Here's my favorite part of the letter:
| Dr. Charles E. Kupchella wrote: | | Your stand against Indian nicknames and logos – a stand that seemed to start out against all references to races and national origin – fizzled before it started when you left out Irish, Celtics, Vandals, and a host of other names. Then, for highly convoluted, hypocritical, and in some instances mysterious reasons, you exempted the Aztecs and other American Indian nicknames at the outset and, following that, you exempted the use of Chippewa, the Utes, the Choctaws, the Catawbas, and the Seminoles, leaving the NCAA position on even American Indian nicknames about as solid as room-temperature Jell-O. |

Maybe teams forced to chnage names could call themselves 'US Cavalry'

It's about time some stood up to the NCAA's backhanded tactics.
I'll be glad to donate money to UND for legal fees in fighting the NCAA.
