Posted: 02/08/05 - 15:36 Post subject: The Riff-Raff Mile Challenge
Here we go people! A running challenge to all of you! I encourage everyone to participate, as it'll be a great running experience... and more importantly... fun! Frontpackers, Midpackers, and Backofthepackers welcome!
Here's how it works:
1) Get out to a track and run the fastest mile you can muster. Report your time in this thread (or PM to me if you're bashful).
2) After the initial reporting, you have one month to train. Do speedwork if you like, increase your mileage, or just do what you already do. It's entirely up to you.
3) After one month, you'll have a week to run another mile and report your time. Results will be announced and you can see the improvements everyone made. We'll have awards* for fastest mile and most improved (both percentage and total seconds).
Important Dates:
Saturday, February 19 - Last day to submit an initial mile time
Saturday, March 26 - Last day to submit your second mile time
Good luck everyone!
*Awards are virtual. You get respect from the other members. Maybe we can convince PH to change your "member" tag under your name to something like Riff Raff Mile Challenge Winner.

I prolly can't bring a snowblower to the track and clear a lane, so I'll strap on the GPS and have a go.
Great idea Mech! And thanks for leading the charge.

I'm up for it, although I don't think Roger Bannister has much to worry about.

Good idea! It's been awhile since I've timed my mile.

Mirroring the post in Riff Raff, I'd prefer that you get out to a track. If that's not possible, second best is a road or trail that is reasonably accurate on measurement. Use a treadmill as an absolute last resort.

I'm in. I've never really timed myself for just a mile time.

PSA #1:
Don't stress out so much over the first mile. Focus on the improvement you'll make in a month.
PSA #2:
You might consider doing a weekly time trial during this challenge on top of your training. The experience of running a single mile fast each week will help bring your time down. (Maybe Monday evenings - that gives you a week to work the kinks out for your last shot on the 26th.)
PSA #3:
If you ever thought about drinking more water during the day and cutting out soft drinks and/or alcohol - I can think of no better challenge than this to get some immediate running rewards for your sacrifices. You'll know what I'm talking about somewhere in the middle of lap #3.

What if our track is under snow?
I have a hard time running a straight mile for time, I can't pace it right.

Ours just melted off this past week. Maybe it'll stay off but I have my doubts....
