for the women tomorrow at the Motorola Marathon maybe well be your's truly.
My running coach, who has also become a personal friend, is the US Track and Field official for the Motorola Marathon. As the offical judge, he is in charge of putting together a 19-person crew to time the marathon. There is money on the line here, so it seems to be a big deal.
He calls me this afternoon. Seems the guy who is supposed to be the official timer for the women had facial surgery. Guy's wife reported to Mixon he is good to go, but he has yet to check in. He missed the meeting today, so Mixon called me to see if I would fill in--the other two timers are not runners  : and are "back up timers." Dude still hasn't checked in with Mixon.
Anyway, I have my VIP pass, official stopwatch, my Mizuno shirt, Mizuno hat, Mizuno gloves, and Mizuno running jacket all of which I get to keep...and also get a free pair of waveriders!!! Pretty simple job, I stand at the start line and when the horn blows I start my stopwatch. Then I get in a van that takes me to the finish line. I stand at the finish line and call out the times for the first 50 women--whatever I say is the official time  A person standing next to me will record whatever I say. (Don't worry, the finish is also video taped, so in case of a judgement call, Mixon makes it, not me.)
This requires a 4 am wake up call. Race starts at 7 am, have to be there by 5 am. Then I get to go to the big dogs party afterwards.
How cool is this? My only condition was even if the other guy shows up, I get the shoes....he checked with Mizuno and they said sure

No way not to be fair. What blows me away is this--of three timers for the women, only one is a runner, the other two non-runners (but dedicated volunteers who have done it for awhile, so they are cool...it's just that Mixon feels better with a runner working the number one watch.)

No way. Dudes and Chicks of the week are the ones running tomorrow. All I have to do is stand around and be just bright enough to work a stopwatch. I ran this race last year, and while it does rock, it is still a marathon.
My duties end after the first 50, but I know alot of people running this race. I am going to stick it out to the end and watch em all finish and help cheer them across that line. I mean all of them, till they stop the clock. And if I can see anyone out there, I will wait for them. We all deserve a cheering section.

That is really cool about being an official timer, but it's even
more cool that you are going to stay to cheer on the runners.

That sounds like so much fun.....I am going to try to do some race volunteer stuff this year, you've inspired me! And doubly way cool about hanging out til the end.....slowpokes like me will appreciate that, I can assure you!!! It gets lonely at the end....

Alan - that should be a great time. good way to fill up a not with family day!! and the MIZUNO stuff is the best. mizuno coat??? does it fit??? wanna get rid of it????
