That was a very cool experience. Day started at about 4:30 am. The timing/officiating crew met at a restaurant near the startline at 5:30 am. We went over our duties and walked over to the startline.
Let me say this, today was very windy and cold. Well, cold for us. Temp at 40, but the wind was howling and it felt much colder. There was timer and recorder for the men, and myself and a recorder assigned to the women. There was also a timer riding in the lead vehicle, and two other alternate timers, just in case something went wrong. Gun sounds, and I manage to get the stopwatch started
Then we get in a van and they drive us to the finish. We get to the finish line about 45 mins into the race--and now comes the hard part. We just stand around in the wind and cold, taking turns going into a tent they had set up.
First woman crossed the line in 2:37:23--and beat the second place winner by about two strides. It caused a bit of stir when the two women came charging up to the chute neck and neck, but the winner took a final lead about 50 yards from the finish.
But my job really couldn't have been any easier. I just stood exactly off to the side of the finish line and read the time on the watch as the first 50 women crossed. Actually, I cannot believe they gave me all this stuff--I would have done this for free. It was just cold and my ears are a little windburned.
After the first 50, I went inside the convention center for awhile to warm up. Then I went back to the finish line to help cheer for people and surprise my friends--me standing just across the finish line yelling for them wasn't what they expected to see. And it was cool just to cheer and encourage people. All in all, it was a big and I said I would he happy to do it again next year.

Race volunteers are so important to an event. Cool that you had a good experience.

sounds like it was fun, well except for the wind...glad it turned out to be a good time...
spectating takes on a bit of a new meaning when you've been out there yourself a couple of times, doesn't it....
give me a report on the Riders if they fit you foot I'll bet you love them as much as I do...
well done!

That sounds like it was a lot of fun! I haven't volunteered at a race in ten years. I should do it again.
