Posted: 12/15/02 - 17:54 Post subject: The Jacksonville Marathon Report
This was my first marathon!!!!
The first half went great. The weather was gorgeous, around 40 degrees at the cannon so I was wearing a tank top and shorts, running hat and gloves. After a planned slow start the guys I was running with began to slowly pick up speed. Chris, Jason and Kaylee drove across the bridge to see me at the turn around point at 14 miles. Jason didn't recognize me on the first go round but as I came back by he seemed to recognize me. I think he was expecting me to finish the race. I think I was even about a minute or so ahead of my last half marathon race at the halfway point. I am waiting on the official results to be posted on the web sometime today.
During the second half 3 of us hung together until about mile 20 then the first guy began to pick up the pace wanting to finish. I was fighting wierd spasms in my legs and thighs and butt and other muscles I didn't know I had! Finally around mile 22 it settled down and the rabbit of the three of us was still in sight so I picked up the pace to try and catch him. During the last 4 miles or so I was fighting fatigue, the desire to walk, and the desire to cry (Not quite sure why that was happening?) Unfortunately no such luck. He seemed to be maintaining the same pace as me. My splits etc are down below. I am now walking around the house gingerly and wondering when my legs will be ready for a light run. That will probably be Wednesday.
Mile Split Running total
1 9:21 9:21.11
2 9:13 18:34.40
3 8:28 27:62.48
4: 8:49 35:51.22
5 8:30 44:21.71
6 8:29 52:51.12
7 8:21 1:01:11
8: 8:13 1:09:24
9 8:15 1:17:39
10 8:18 1:25:58
11 8:43 1:34:41
12 8:53 1:43:34
13 8:43 1:52:17
14 9:02 2:01:19
15 8:23 2:09:92
16: 8:56 2:18:37
17 8:39 2:27:16
18 8:48 2:36:64
19 8:44 2:44:48
20 8:56 2:53:44
21 9:00 3:02:44
22 9:08 3:11:52
23 8:35 3:20:27
24 8:37 3:29:03
25 8:40 3:37:43
26 8:40 3:46:23
Finish 1:47 3:48:10 (watch time)
37 in the 35-40 age group (They had me listed as 36 insted of 34!)
224 overall
Anyway I am really pleased at how I did. Time to take it easy for week and then think about doing a 5 mile cross country race at the end of the month.
Have a great Sunday everyone.
Eric

excellent time for your first time, boiler!
the last few miles can be very emotional and an urge to cry is something that I've never personally experienced but have heard of quite frequently.
best of luck with your recovery....
have a guinness on me!

I did buy a 12 of Heinekens on my way home, I didn't even think about picking up some Guiness. I guess I will save that one for my next PR!

[scroll:f94aa2d45d] GREAT JOB, ERIC! [/scroll:f94aa2d45d]
I let out a little cheer for you while I was in the grocery store this morning, which is probably why you had that 8:13 8th mile.

Eric, Good going! Nice race. Looks like you'll have a negative split on the halves and solid pace all the way, no fade, tremendous!!! Give us some details on the Jax course, support, and how'd you rate it.
