Drove up to Franklin, TN on Wednesday and got settled in at the in-law's house. Chilled out with the family and went to bed a little early.

Up the next morning bright and early and did a quick ~1.5 miles around the subdivision to get loosened up. Did a good bit of stretching and relaxing waiting for my in-laws to get up and drive me to the race. Got to the race start at about 6:40 because my m-i-l thought that the race started at 7:00. Picked up my t-shirt and champion chip (which was a first for me) and stretched some more. at 7:00, no one was lining up for the race so I asked a volunteer what time the race started and she informed me that it was at 7:30. At 7:25-ish I lined up towards the front and made small talk with the other racers. A quick pre-race preview and the gun was fired.

I started off at what seemed like a pretty decent pace and the pack thinned out behind me quickly. The leader/winner of the race was obvious and everyone else was just shooting for a place in the top 10. I found two guys to run with and one of them asked me what pace I was shooting for, a 19:30ish finish. He was too so we decided to pace each other the whole race. Mile 1 (no mile marker) was quickly passing by and my pace was steady and I felt good and just a little cold. Mile 2 (13:00) was more of the same as the three of us paced each other the entire way. The younger guy in our group broke away after that and I sped up to keep up with him but couldn't maintain the pace but was still running strong. Dropped the older guy in our group a little after that and passed another guy just a little later. The finish line was in sight. Kicked it up another half a notch. I didn't have it in me to kick it up any more. Finish line was coming up quickly and I lenghtened out my stride just a little.

Crossed the finish in 20:45 and quickly met up with the two guys that I had run with almost the whole way. The both felt that the course was too long and that we all should have been in the 19:?? range.

Hung around for quite a while to see the final results and they had me posted as 2nd in my age group and 7th overall (edit: CR website lists me as the 11th place overall) . Only 15 seconds away from winning my age group.

I stopped and talked to the guy that won the race in 18:35. Guess where he was from? WISCONSIN! He also felt the course was too long because he normally runs in the high 16's and low 17's for a 5K. He said that his dad even joked with him on the way to the race about he'd have to walk home if he finished in the 18's.

Finally they handed out the awards for the 5K and I got a tape measure with a little metal sticker on it that I'll post a picture of when I get home.

I also made it on TV that evening according to my grandparents. I did see the cameraman and I did have to push a few people down so I could get on camera. Wink

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with my pace but since the course was too long, I'm not that happy with the overall time. Just one more thing to work on. Look for me to come back next year at an even faster pace.

John

Great report, too.

Wonder if the tape measure prize will be the wrong length too. Wink

very nice race, John...you held a steady pace throughout, which given the lack of the first mile marker can sometimes be tough to do...don't worry about whether it was a little long or not...keep putting in the the great training and find yourself a certified course next time....and sub-20:00 will almost surely be in the bag.

(those mafia guys have some kind of network huh??)

How ironic that you get an award of a tape measure for a race that wasn't measured right!!?! Bizarre that they'd go through the expense of getting championchips but not have the course certified.
Nice racing! 2nd in the age group..congrats!!

Seriously, excellent run! It's too bad about the course. Especially since you put in such a wonderful effort. But your time rocks and ya finished with a 2nd in your age group? Congrats to ya, PH!

I'm just impressed you camped out at the in-laws house for a race the next day. How frustrating about the course length, but your time was excellent regardless. Excellent race!

Very Happy
