You will require firm, comfortable shoes with strong laces, and soles which have a good grip. A stout staff or crook is useful.
Carry refreshments; for example, bread, sausage, cheese, fruit and ginger ale. Before getting away, tell someone the details of your route and how long you expect to be gone. A colourful woolen hat will prevent heat loss through the head and will be easy to spot should you get into difficulty. A whistle and binoculars are also recomended.
Do not run, it is always more plesurable to wend your way, rather than heading forcefully towards a particular point. Wending is a great and fine old art that can be discussed at some later date.
