The beginning of that long thread got me wondering about what was good about all the TV I watched as a kid. I watched a ton. Wasn't a babysitter (no cable until I was a teenager and by then I was on the diving team in school). I immediately thought of two shows that my parents watched every week.

All in a Family - learned about tolerance. I remember asking a lot of questions. Oh, yeah, in our house TV time was full of interaction... no shushing to keep it down so everyone could hear. That family was so very unlike my family because we were/are a stoic bunch... no loud voices, no arguments between adults and children, no religious/political/sexual discussions ever. I learned a little bit about other families and opinions through this TV show at the same time that I learned about my own family.

M*A*S*H - Wit. Full of wit it was. I don't remember learning much about anything other than war is hell and it's hell on individuals. Think I would've learned that one elsewhere too. The human interaction, though. It was good in this show. Father Mulcahy (sp?) was always a character that I enjoyed watching. Oh, and I watched for so many years that I loved the evolution of Hot Lips. She started as a characature and ended a full persona.

Mutal of Omaha's Wild Kingdom and Walt Disney were the only two television staples in my youth. If I was actually in the house on a Saturday morning the cartoons I liked were Mighty Mouse and Johnny Quest. I watched very little tv in my teens although I did enjoy SNL and Second City. Cable wasn't around until my early 20's.

The guy in the office next to me was never allowed to watch Hogan's Heros because his dad was a German POW.

"KLINK!"

"Ah, General Burkhalter!"

One of the pleasures of college life was getting Hogan's every weeknight from 4:30 to 6:00 - three episodes! The wonders of cable. Of course, people were never in much of a mood to leave the cafeteria. Smile

MASH showed me a lot of how to have a sense of humor in the middle of horror and out of control situations.

All in the Family really helped in my formation of my conservative values Wink
