I've been checking out a few different marathon regimans, (Hanson, Higdon, to name few.) I consider myself an intermediate runner, my mileage fluctuates between 20-45 mpw. I've been running for 5 years.

Any of you have any experience or training plans that have worked well for the first-time marathoner?

Thanks in advance.

I have always believed that marathon programs or any training program for that matter are only guidelines they don't take into account the individual; their strengths their weakness's.
I'm sure these programs help you get through a marathon but there is a lot of difference between surviving and running a marathon.
If you are consistently running 45 mile weeks (and include a long run EVERY week) you are already well on the way to running a marathon.
If you can COMFORTABLY and gradually build up your weekly mileage to around 50 to 60 miles per week you will run a better (faster) marathon.

BASICALLY, it's as simple as that. The longer the preparation, the more miles in your legs, the more weekly long runs the better.
But again it comes back to the individual. Hard days, easy days. Am I overtired from building up my mileage last week? etc. Constantly access your progress day to day, week to week, month to month.

Yep, it's all about the individual. Programs can give you a good basis to work from...but everyone is different.

I used the beginner's program that was online at Runners world.com when I ran my first. And it worked great for me.

Thank for your input.

I'm imagining myself running this thing and hitting mile 10 with 16.2 to go kindv'e freaks me out.

I used Hal Higdon's Intermediate Marathon schedule to run my first. I have been running since 2002 and had about the same weekly mileage as you describe. I have run a lot of 5K's through Half Marathons prior to the training.
I had to tweak the training schedule to fit into my 'life' schedule, but pretty much followed as closely as possible. My main concern was the mileage and the speedwork.
It really worked for me and I won't lie to you, it was TOUGH!! I did finish my first marathon last year at Chicago in 3:39:19 using that plan...

Good luck to you and healthy running...

I like Glover's book "Competitive Runner's Handbook" it has schedules for novice, basic, advance runners. I kind of followed the novice plan for my first, and then for my second I made up my own schedule.
