I just found out my immediate boss has access to everyone's email. While I figured someone somewhere could I had no idea he could right from his computer. He had fun this morning reading me all my e-mails.

Your e-mail at work is technically company property. He can. And apparently, did.

Let me take a shot at this one. How? Because he's the boss. Why? Because he's the boss. He needs to know if you're being productive. Remember: his need to know supercedes your right to exist.
The cardinal rule of office-sent e-mail: Don't send/receive anything that you wouldn't want read by anyone else.

I understand that, but it seems very unprofessional to me. I would understand it if there had been some abuse or something going on, but just for fun, .......... seems very unethical to me. Seems like any respectful relationship between the snooper and snoopee is now gone.

i really didn't know this about work emails.
sooooo, in my typical RR fashion, i sent a questionable email to my husband once.
the phone rang immediately - um, he wasn't that pleased with my little pick me uppper.
i had no idea big brother was watching him either.

Mr Aire and I write each other emails with the full belief that they are being monitored by the USAF. We have delightful little codes that would stump our best codebreakers, I tell ya.

I'm not sure how often he checks peoples mail (I don't think its often). I wasn't in trouble or anything. We were actually discussing a problem with the e-mail system and he happened to mention that little tid-bit. I must have looked a little shocked for he immediately pulled up all my mail. He didn't really mean nothing by it, just wanted to give me the business.

I read a report that 75% of bosses admit to reading emails and 50% to phone calls....and I guess the hidden camera thing is growing too.

If you've got admin rights on most corporate e-mail systems and are dealing with a version of Windows from NT on up (I'm not sure about other op systems) you can see what gets typed on anyone's networked system.
With XP you can literally take over someone's computer if you're networked together and have the admin rights (conceivably you can make changes to someone else's default settings in Excel, for example).
I never did this when I was corporate and can't imagine having the nosiness/free time to even try, but there's a lot of people with no lives willing to kiss corporate butt to get ahead any way they can.
That's just my experience/opinion. No charge...
