As I hinted over the weekend, I am kind of an assistant coach for my HS's boys cross country team. Today they lost focus to the point that the coach walked out of practice and I didn't go to the last bit of practice.
So, what I'm looking for are things I can do to get them to focus for the last couple weeks of the season. I thought about keeping them after practice and sitting down with them (without the coach) and asking them their goals. Then reminding them that the only way to reach those goals is not the coaches pushing them, but for them to push themselves in practice.
What are your thoughts?

Are they not getting the miles done?
My team was kinda loopy, but we did the workouts and it always came together in the end. A few of the times we got out of hand our coach would not give us a choice on how far to run since he'd load us up and drive straight in one direction and we'd have to run back. I kid you not, I remember one long run in particular where he carted us out to the hinterlands and it was one silent group coming back.

the good 'ol days. You don't give kids a choice. Heck, when we girls were given a choice it was to the candy store and back . We also had a trail route and our coach couldn't figure out why the guys ran fast on that day. ......ummm coach that'd be because someone that is 18 has 6th period off. First 6 guys to the woods get the beer.
Our coach was proud of his nickname. We called him "deek". It was 2 years before we revealed that it meant "dick" in southern speak
oh......I got the funniest story yet. One day our coach (an elementary teacher whom rode his bike from school to high school for practice) was late and pissed because someone stole his clunker bike. On that days run, one of the guys stole a bike and gave it to coach. Two days later, coach says that his neighbor confronted him for stealing his kids bike.
here's the touching part:
So at awards night we are all sitting in the school auditorium and when
our coach is making his speech, the kid that had "stole" the neighbor's bike comes riding down the aisle with a brand new bike that we all chipped in for. Coach Deek had tears.
